Singer 10 vs 9

Post by mistercmo »

was the cylinder head (valves, cam, etc) the same in the 10 and the 9?

The original head on my 10 motor was a mess (worn cam, burned valves) so, when I first got the car in NH, I freshened up the "Balam" head (from a complete 9 motor) and put that on the 10 block. It worked fine.

cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,

you are bang on. Aside from a few minor external differences, and a couple of internal, the head, cam, ancilliaries were all interchangeable. The only other difference was the SU carb. There is a"10 HP" stamping along the flange where the carb attaches to the manifold. With the different displacement there would be a difference in the needle.

Another nice conversion for the A Series, also involving the Super Ten: the 4 speed gearbox. This would require modification to the A's gearbox mount... but that is something else.

Thanks for the insight Charlie, the 10 engine is a nice fit for the A or 4A. Enjoy the power!
