I was about to start a "homespun" process of cleaning out the water passages in the block and cylinder head. I've collected all of my old gun cleaning brushes and thought I'd chip away as best I could with brush, thin steel rods, compressed air etc. Any suggestions?

Think you have it down.
Not much else to say, that stuff can really build up quite thick so it can take a while to get all out. Best way is hot tank but there is a reason we homeowners don't have hot tanks in our backyards.

Hi Charlie,
I am with Mike... a good dunking in a hot tank is, for me, the best bet. Otherwise you will be endlessly chipping away. Nice thing too is that it takes off all the paint and leaves the surface ready for painting.
One thing though is take off any bushes, bushings, etc as they may be affected.

When I cleaned the water passages in my 4AD block, I used 1/4 " copper tubing and water pressure to blast out the rust & sediment. It was messy but effective. Good Luck.
