1074cc vs. 1497cc Engine Identification

I am intimately familiar with the 4AD engine (1497cc) but am unfamiliar with the earlier 1074cc engine. Can someone tell me what unique external differences can help identify each engine? I have someone that has a Singer engine but he doesn't know which one it is. Would serial numbers be unique for the 4AD? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark,

There are a few specific things that you can use to distinguish a 1074 from a 1500 engine.

Serial Number: Both found on right side of engine where joined to the gearbox.
- Each engine has a unique serial number. The prefix will identify the engine series:
- A = A Series
- 4A = 4A
- etc.

Casting mark: 1074 "9" engine has a cast "9" on the sides of the block.
- It is interesting to note that the 10 HP engines are almost identical to the Nine, except the 10 has a "10" cast in the side, and the engine serial number prefix is "B".

Size: 1500 is larger than the 1074
- Besides the obvious, the engines are bigger. A 1500 engine will squeeze into the engine compartment of an A or 4A, but just! Our club librarian has such a monster!

Water pump: 1500 has one 1074 does not.
- You, the 1074 uses thermo-siphon for circulation of cooling the engine. Essentially it is the principle where hot liquid rises and draws up the cooler liquid. A good cue is also with the rather large holding tank on the radiator.

Oil filter: 1500 replaceable filter cartridge, 1074 external filter.
- The 1500's oil filter is a replaceable element mounted in an external housing on the lower left-side of the engine. The 1074 has an external canister connected to the block via pipes.

Gearbox mount: 1500 is round
- The 1500's gearbox is more of a round shape than the 1074.

Engine Mounts: 1500 has single front mount, 1074 has dual front mount.
- Each engine has mountings at the front of the engine and at the end of the gearbox. The 1500 has a single block that is located under the water pump. The gearbox has two mounts (one on each side at the very back). There is also a "torque" buffer on the right side of the engine attached by the gearbox bolts that prevents the engine from over twisting when revving.
- The 1074 has two mounts at the front of the block, one on either side. A single mount is at the rear of the gearbox.

Carbs: 1500 has single or dual Solex, 1074 has single SU doundraught (A Series) or Solex (4A, 4AB)

Water Outlets: 1500 on left side, 1074 on right side
- The 1074's upper water outlet also has the mounts for the coil. The coil on the 1500 engine is mounted on the firewall. The later 1500 engines (4ADT) also have a bulge in the upper water outlet that houses a thermostat.

Valve Cover: 1500 has 4 nuts, 1074 has 2 bolts

There are probably many more, these are the ones that I can come up with for now.
