Hey Bruce,

Very interesting! Can you post some photos?

4A 5152T indicates that your car is actually a 1950 4A. The pre-fix "4A" indicates the model and the suffix "T" indicates the year and T was 1950. The post-war chassis number suffix started in 1946/47 as "Q".

The 4 in 4A denotes a 4 speed gearbox, which was the major change to the Roadster when it was upgraded for the 1950 model year. The previous A Series, produced from 1946 to 1949, had the 3 speed unit.

Note that these post-war Singers have POSITIVE GROUND electrics, like many British cars of the period.

Original colours for 1950 were:

Maroon and burgundy
Black and signal red
Signal red and signal red
Grey and red
Green and brown

The first colour was the body, and the second the interior.

There are no rubber boots on the gearshift or the pedals. There was, however, a large rubber cover over the gearbox itself which the base of the gear lever casting protruded from.

A single mirror was originally fitted to the driver's side windshield support casting.

Look forward to hearing more about your Singer and welcome to our happy little band of owners!

Phillip

Hi David,
Are you just looking for cars in the US?
The Aus Singer Car Club has a book that has just been revised that has a lot of Singers owned in Australia.
Cheers,
MJC

I am restoring a 1946 Singer and need 4 chrome hubcaps and the running board strips. Anyone know a site to buy the running board strips?

Hi Grant,

Check out the pre-war threads on running board rubber. The Roadsters had the same rubber tread. Brian Clifton in the UK had some rubber made and it is excellent.

Metro Rubber in the USA also sells a version of the rubber, but the profile is not quite right.

The chrome end caps are not commercially available, but would make a great project, if someone wants to take it on.

There is a set of original hubcaps on eBay now:

Or you can buy the repros, but they don't have the Singer logo stamped into them. They used to be available some years ago.

Hope that helps!

Hi Mr Green, I have aquired a Red singer 4ab 1952 UK Reg MXB 749 VIN7954V Requires restoration to the scuttle ply boards as they were insect damaged, the ash frame was not sufficiently affected as to require replacement all woodwork thoroughly treated, history is only from the 1970 s but was laid up for 17 years to 1981 the owner only the 3rd was in Jamaica, he had done a quite lot of restorative work and obviously cherished the car, lovely polish to the bodywork, re upholster but in cream vinyl, new hood , and side screens look original, doors need hinges improving valves ground etc, rubber gear box cover was a bit tatty but repaired well, chrome work was attended to but not the best quality job, I have 1 hub cap to chrome, look forward to driving it soon, Ken Murray ,Codsal near Birmingham where it was made,

Ken, you may want to look around the main website, especially the "Gallery" for pictures, drawings and measurements to help with wood replacement.

About 2 years ago I went to a yard sale here in eastern KY and found a 1946 Singer in a barn where it had been for 24 years. It had been brought in from Pennsylvania. Restoring an old car had always been on my bucket list so I bought it although I am not a car person and knew very little about what I was getting in to. There were many challenges since it had no engine or transmission. I bought 2 old MG midgets and put one of the engines in the car and it was a very tight fit. I wired the car and it was a great learning experience. The mechanical brakes were a challenge also but I got them working fairly well. I had most of the chrome parts rechromed. The seats came from a 1953 since he opnly had one of the original 1946 seats. He had part of a 1953 which came with the 46. The car drives very nicely and a pleasure to drive. I will post some pictures.

Bonjour,

Hello,

I am French, owner of an L4ADT n°3056X for 6 years.

I read the article on the revision of the steering box, and I would like to know the references of the felt joint, or the SPI seal at the bottom of the case, or the dimensions of the SPI seal. I have not disassembled yet because I am afraid of not finding the right joint.

I live in PAU, in the southwest of France, near Lourdes.

Thank you for all your useful documentation.

Hi,
Just purchased a Singer 4AD or part of one. It has no engine or transmission and is missing many other parts as well. Still, the frame is very good, most of the panels are there plus various spars. Putting it together will be a labor of love, and probably involve many bouts of invective, but hope to do so. I figure if I can't find a Singer engine and tranny, can put something else in that is comparable. The Chassis Number is L4AD1913V and I have much of the information on its import into the USA. I expect once i get started, I will be needing to pick a lot of brains. Thanks ahead of time for your help.
