Haven't got my trafficators working yet, they're a direct fit ?

Hey, guys. I just installed this weekend the answer to my trafficator problem. Trafficators work on a constant power flow and magnet system. I bought a festoon bulb replacement from (If I may drop a name) Classic Car LEDs which is a bulb attached to a mini micro board that replaces your normal festoon light bulb. All I did was replace a light bulb and now when my trafficator goes up and acts normal except that the bulb is brighter and flashes. Each bulb cost as much as a box of festoon bulbs but I think it was worth it. It keeps the classic feel of the car, yet seems a lot safer to have a flashing signal than just a constant one and NO wiring work.

In answer to Wiliam's question, no I don't have trafficators on my LeMans 4-seater but I thought the flashing LEDs looked a really good idea. Thanks to Bruce for pointing me to the Classic Car LEDs website where I found the amber/white LEDs that look like they will fit into the Lucas 1130 sidelights and I have just ordered a pair.

Incidently, At the rear I have modified my original style pork pie lamps to accept 'small globe' 21W/5W and 21W bulbs and fitted red/amber lenses to provide flashers. In the past I have made red and amber lenses using casting resin and a silcone mould taken from the original glass but these days lenses are available on ebay.

Well, the white/amber LEDs arrived from Classic Car LEDs and frankly, I'm disappointed. Whilst they are the correct length to replace a standard 21W/5W bulb (unlike other vendors products) the intensity of light is all wrong. The white is very bright but the amber is less so. Therefore it is probably unsuitable as a turn signal when a standard bulb has a ratio of 4:1.

Just to clarify the fitment of trafficators to Singer Roadsters, the A and 4A came standard with them fitted from the factory. The control was part of the steering center and horn button. This unit was used on many other British cars like the Ford A93A Prefect and a variation was used on Austin Healeys.

With the introduction of the 4AB, the steering center became just a blank Bakelite cover until the late model 4ADs, which got a pressed metal cover with an "SM" logo in the center of it cast into clear plastic and painted. Interestingly, the chrome surround of the plastic center is the same as the earlier one used with the horn button.

As some have said, trafficators on the 4AD may have been included or deleted according to the rexport market laws. The 4AD parts manual certainly makes mention of this for headlamps. It is also possible it became an "extra-cost item" as Singer Motors struggled and costs were cut. This included previously standard items on the "A" such as leather upholstery and glass sidescreens, replaced by Vinyl and plastic. At one point headlamps were painted and some components could be ordered in "mock chrome" - basically silver paint.

I owned a very original '54 4AD-T with Paul Bouchard and I took copious photos of it as we restored it. Probably the most original Roadster I have ever come across. I will see if I have a photo of the trafficator switch.

I'm sorry to hear the flashers didn't work for Brian. My wife followed me in her car and said the flashers were brighter and more noticeable than my plain old festoon bulbs. Prior to finding the flashing festoon bulbs I had wired in an under the dash flashing unit for my converted tail lights but it still was inconvenient to use compared to using the horn button trafficators. Maybe the LED flashing festoon bulbs aren't a perfect ratio, but they worked more than fine enough for me. I'd still recommend them to someone wanting to not go through rewiring and installing flashing turn signals, for as I look back it was a bitch to install my secondary flashers. Good luck how ever anyone decides to go and lets keep up the great ideas and support for each other. The support is what keeps us sane in this hobby.

Just to clarify - the amber/white LEDs were to convert my front side lights to flash amber rather rather than the twin filament bulbs that flash white. This seemed a better solution than the capless bulb conversion. I am sure the flashing LEDs in the trafficators are a big improvement over festoon bulbs.
