Tools question

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Tools question

Post by Bantam37 »

Hi everyone.
I've started work on my '37 Bantam and found that none of my tools fit the sizes of bolts and nuts properly. I have just finished a full restoration of post-war Jaguar and I have a reasonably good selection of both imperial and metric tools.
Neither my imperial or metric size tools fit properly. Also none of my thread dies. The thread is neither UNF or UNC, no metric.
Please, to save my time searching - can you tell me what sizes the threads and nut sizes are?
Cheers

The threads are BSF and you will need a selection of whitworth wrenches and sockets.

Aha! Thanks Peter.
Learning something new. Searching online now, there are some sets available. So the marking is the same - e.g. 1/4" but the size is different in Whitworth... Weird as.
Will get the sockets set then.

Try https://www.holden.co.uk or https://britishfasteners.com in the U.S. They are about 1/10 that cost

unfortunately, if you want to clean up the threads after taking them apart with your new wrenches/sockets, you will also need Taps & Dies. Good news is there are not that many different sizes in the car, so only a few taps & dies.

Hi Mikey
Yes, I did that with my old Jag and collected all taps and dies. I usually replace all bolt/nuts to new but not all can be replaced.
Now I have to get BSF ones, which is not an easy task in New Zealand. BSW are plenty, but none in BSF available.
Well, have to order from UK and wait for another month or so delivery...

Thanks for help.
