G'day from Western Australia

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

I had a win over the 4speed gearbox this afternoon. Pity that some gears are damaged due to water in the box.
One question ? Do all 4 speed boxes have the so called free wheeling thingy ?? This caught me out, as turning the shaft one way you have a drive, but not on the opposite rotation !!

And the bell housing needs major repairs to fix the cracks

Does someone knows how to remove the starting handle drive from the crankshaft ? Is it left or right hand thread ? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Colin, I preferred to ask before damaging anything. Well !! I did give it two go's, one left one right with a tool that I fabricated but with no luck.
I will apply some heat then. Cheers.

It's also r/h on the 9 ...it would undo instead of starting the engine otherwise :o !!! I have cut a slot in an old socket that just fits into the hole in the dog ...you can use an impact driver on an air line then

Bill, I thought so too, but I had in mind that if left hand thread it would tighten itself while the engine is running. Saying that by past experience but on a more modern car.
Thanks for the tip. This should help as well.

I found my 1934 crank badly scored, so I went on dismantling another motor and g/box that I recently bought. After removing the flywheel I had a surprise !

Maybe I have a counter balance crank ??

I just hope that I can save it and the block too

See the repair ?

WOW! Bingo!
Speed head and speed crank.
Block has cracked in the usual place between the casting plug holes but otherwise...fingers crossed that it is all salvagable!

This is the pleasure of being on such good forum, you always find somebody who will tell you what you have ! :D Because my next question was : how rare are those motors?
Well ! I know now . I just hope that I can find not too much more damages and be able to repairs the cracks. I will post some pictures.

Here is a picture of the cracks in the block. Maybe I can find a shop to stich it ?

Yes! This is another place they crack. Usually from over-tightening the head studs and/or head nuts.

I have a Speed block that needs the same. Cold metalock stitching is the standard practice on these blocks and heads, but, as has been mentioned perhaps there are new techniques like laser welding that might work.

The ohc 6 cylinder Singers crack in similar places. I've had mine repaired by cold stitching and the results were 100%. T

As an aside, the centre bolt in 'your' patch will not have helped since it could have tightened against the stud?? Worth looking at I'd say. But well done on your find it all looks salvageable to me !!!
