For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Hello all,
I was looking to buy an Austin 7 to built a special, but found bits and pieces of a Singer instead . Really attracted by the OHC and hydraulic brakes, just to be different than anyone else !
Could you help me identifying what I have ? I understand that the chassis is a Bantam, the motors 972cc , one with a 4spd g/box the other with a 3speeds, but they look different as well, not the same blocks or heads.

I try to learn as much as possible from the Internet, Google and other but . Would you have some literatures that you recommend ? I have lot of help from someone who built a supercharged Singer special, but I cannot bother him all the time !! :?
Especially for the chassis, I would like to find some drawings with measurements to check mine as I need to fix some cracks.

The numbers shown are engine block numbers, the one with IC should possibly read LC which I think would make it a Bantam series, the 555 is from a Nine.
The main engine numbers were stamped in the alloy chaincase cover at the front of the engine with luck they should match.
Chassis number is to front right hand rail at the front either top or side.

I have seen frame/chassis drawings with very few measurements, but they were for Le Mans, not something else. Not sure it exists. For the frame, the most important thing is taking diagonal measurements. Left front corner to right rear and matching that with right front corner to left rear and doing the same from various points on the frame, on my frame, I had crossmembers that I should take diagonals on.

The Book of the Bantam by David Andreassen is a useful compilation of information on the Bantam (see sample page below). He is on the Forum so you should be able to contact him. He is based in Australia so getting the book should be easy if you manage to make contact with him (which can be a little slow)

Many thanks to all of you, really helpful. My friend lent me his D Hardwick catalog, And I learned a lot during the week end ! :wink:
I would like some chassis drawings as mine is bit on a bend and a "repaired" front rail need some TLC. I'll take some pictures tomorrow to show you.

Hi Thierry,

What a nice find. Those bits will make a nice special!

The 'rust coloured' engine is a Bantam unit circa 1936. The green engine is circa 1934/35. Cool to see one still with much of its original green paint. You should scan it for a colour reference! Judging from the manifolding and carbs, both are saloon or van engines.

If you are building a special, use the later engine. It has a better block and oil system design and the head is the same "semi-hemi" style as the Le Mans used. You'll need to convert to larger inlet valves and open up the porting a bit.

I have an identical frame, but LHD. It was an export model sent to Canada. I'd also love to build a TT style special on mine, but that is a long way down the list of things to do! It's very very rough!

Thanks Phillip, your advices are much appreciated. I sent an Email to David Andreassen about his book as well.
Preparing the chassis for the sand blasting man I found so many loose rivets that I end up with a flat pack chassis :D Anyway easier to carry and repair.

LOL! I think I'd have to do the same with mine. In some places it is rusted right through!

Well! I noticed so many loose rivets, I went all in ! Good thing in a way as the round crossmembers where full of rust flakes.
It will be easier now to repairs the cracks and bends. The search tool is really handy, I find so many pictures to help the rebuild.
