mechanical front brake issue on 1946

Post by GRANT »

I AM TRYING TOP RESTORE A 1946 AND AM HUNG UP ON THE FRONT BRAKES. WHEN I PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL IT PULLS THE ROD BACKWARD WHICH PUSHES THE LATERAL RODS OUTWARDS. BUT TO GET THE CYLINDERS TO EXPAND THE LATERAL RODS NEED TO PULL TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE CAR WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT HAPPENS. THE MECHANISM LOOKS ORIGINAL AND DOES NOT SEEM TOP HAVE BEEN ALTERED THROUGH THE YEARS BUT IT SEEMS TO BE BACKWARDS. WHEN I DISCONNECT THE PUSH ROD FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SWIVEL THE FRONT MECHANISM TO PULL THE LATERAL RODS MANUALLY THE CYLINDER EXPANDS AS IT SHOULD TO MAKE THE BRAKE PADS CONTACT THE DRUM. I HAVE SPENT HOURS TRYING TO SEE WHAT IS BACKWARDS BUT I GIVE UP. HELP!!!!!!! I TOOK EVERYTHING APART AND CLEANED AND GREASED ALL THE PARTS. THE BACK BRAKES WORK FINE. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I WILL ATT

While a picture would be helpful, it seems to me the only way your situation would occur is if the forward bellcrank (the part that swivels at the front and connects the two brake rods) must be installed upside down.

When it is the same as the 1950, the first question is, do you have the right parts on the front brakes?
The mechanism front and rear is different.

Ans a remark, avoid using only capital letters, standard text is easier to read.

this is the mechanism on the front brake. It causes the lateral rods to push instead of pull to expand the cylinders. any ideas? Thanks to anyone with help as I expect to be asking a hundred questions before this is done. I am not of a mechanical background (medical) and I know I am up for a challenge.

I would swap the bars left and right, then they are pulling instead of pushing
On that way mines are mounted also on that way..
Not the best picture, but my car is placed in a corner where I cannot walk :)

many thanks--I reversed the bellcrank and switched the lateral rods and they work fine. Your picture showed the correct design. I wonder if someone drove this car without front brakes since it was this way when I got it.

I am sure its happened but that is scary, the front brakes do most of the braking on cars.
