Availability of manuals for 1935 LeMans

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Availability of manuals for 1935 LeMans

Post by ukmax »

After a search online, I am quite surprised to be unable to find any workshop or parts manuals specifically for my car but maybe I'm searching incorrectly.

I'm currently interested in my gearbox and steering box which I'm sure would have also been fitted to other Singer models, possibly earlier and probably later, therefore can anyone indicate what other models these were and where I might obtain copies of the manuals.

Better still, does anyone have a spare copy of the the appropriate manual/s for my car please?

Many thanks

David

I'm not sure what car you have David, but I haven't found workshop manuals for any of my three pre-war cars. You only seem to get the user's handbook. 'The Nine Workshop' which is a collection of articles by Ian Blackburn is your best bet, but it is not a manual as such..

Hello Colin,

Thank you for your reply, at least it seems I'm not alone. I've done a search for the Ian Blackburn publication but I have had no luck so far.

I did mention my car in the in the heading but the full details are 1935 Singer LeMans 972cc Special Speed. Do you know what other Singer vehicles (if any) use the same gearbox and steering box?

You can get the 'Nine Workshop Revisited' from the 'books' part of the Singer Owners' Club webshop. It's extremely useful and has quite a lot of technical data. Link below:

The owner's handbook is useful, too, but is insufficient on its own.

Thank you John,

I am a member of the SOC so I'll check that out.

The main problem is that I don't yet know enough about prewar Singers and what parts were/are interchangeable between various models. Ideally, for starters, I would like to get hold of an exploded diagram of the complete gearbox, I have a good diagram of the 1944/46 Singer 9 gearbox but I know this differs from the prewar boxes.

I don't know if there are any differences between the '34 and '35 gearboxes, but you may find this link useful.

There are at least two types of box an early 33 is different to later, other differences i believe relate to gear ratios. I do have drawings of both but currently I'm in the process of a house move hence they are not accessable at the moment.

The Nine Workshop book explains gearbox variations and has an exploded diagram. You need this book!

Thank you again, I have ordered the Nine workshop book and await its arrival with bated breath!

Because I shall be using my car for rallying and other competitive motor sport, it would be ideal to have a second gearbox and differential with different ratios. I'm not sure of my current gearbox ratios but the differential is 4.75:1 which replaced the 5.5:1 unit that was fitted. However, my current concentration will be on getting the existing gearbox and steering box up to spec, especially the latter as it would never pass scrutineering!
