Thanks for the reply, I'll know better of what I'll need once we get to that part.

Would anyone know of a cross reference for a starting handle ?
We are trying to get this 52 4AD motor to spin after 30 years of sitting in a barn.
Would a handle for a MG-TD work? Or are they very specific to each vehicle.

I made a quick tool from a cheap 3/8" drive socket (9/16" I think-helps to 'pilot' in the end of the crank) with a 1/4" hole drilled through perpendicular about 1/2" from the the socket end, and inserted a 1/4" rod about 1.5" long. Allows me to use a ratchet with long extension (if the engine's in the car) to turn it over for setting valves or whatever.

Thanks for the quick reply. Think I understand your instruction, but a photo always helps. Would you have a pic of the tool you made ?
I would think drilling that 1/4" hole through the socket wasn't too fun ?

Never mind, I ended up getting a real starting handle for her. It fit just right, it's just the motor is stuck.

I would take the head off and soak the cylinders in diesel or similar.

As we're pulling the block out tomorrow, it will be my first opportunity to locate the engine serial number. I've read it's on the freewheel cover, somewhere on the top. Could someone please give me any help with exactly where to look ? Clock position, and from what point of view. Is it (the number) facing skyward, or rearward ?

Hello guys,

I am new in the forum :P I own a SM roadster 1953, that came in Coronation Blue. I am getting organized to start the works. Car is very complete and original, still with all the original wiring and more...

Does anybody know how to reach John Lewis? I am looking for the Coronation Blue and I just read that he did an awesome job matching the color, maybe he has a color code or something...but I can't find him in the list of the members.

Thank you!!

Gonzalo

PD: Here a pic of the car.

Try lewisj(@)acmh.org Is this a California car. Interesting to see the oversized bumperettes sold by Vaughan Singer Motors.

Just by the large bumperettes. They were an option offered by Vaughan Singer Motors in Hollywood. Make sure you keep them as they are relatively rare.

Oh I see it. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I don't have the rear bumper, it is just one of the few parts missing.

I too lacked a rear bumper, so substituted a bumper from an early 60's VW Beetle (just the main bumper blade). Had to fabricate brackets as well. I did this as a 'temporary' measure about 10 years ago.....
