Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
Good luck with the restoration...looks like a nice solid project to start with.
I've done a few of these Roadsters over the years and I'll follow with interest!

Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
May need your guidance with your experience.
Been sourcing parts or giving it our best shot..
Will attempt the running boards..I’m sure they will look better than fence panels.
Purchased a small soder blaster to do smaller jobs.
Can still taste the soda...soda is expensive in Australia..$50 for 5 kilos.
Did both bumper bars tappet cover & horn 5 kilo gone.
After spending way over $30000 for our vw beetle..decided to be wiser this time
Will prime & chrome with a clear coat tomorrow..
Have located the right cold rolled sheet metal for door re skin & running boards.
We are missing 1 door striker plate if anybody is willing to sell please.
No seat springs came with car so having them made in foam.
We cut the marine ply from some original frame left.
Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
I have a spare pair running boards, but how to get them from the Netherlands in your place?

Happy to help in any way I can.
BTW, looking at your photos, I notice that your door latches and catches are actually MG items.
The horn is correct and should go where the coil is currently located. The coil should be bolted to the upper water manifold on the side of the head. You'll see the two little cast parts with holes drilled into them to take the bolts. Top faces down...
Center transmission cover should be a much smaller rubber cover, not a large wooden(?) one. Fiberglass reproductions have been available through various Singer clubs over the years.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Phillip

Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
Thank you for offer tvdwerf..wish we were closer to you guys.
All good up for the challenge..have ordered cold rolled sheets @ 0.95.
Will attempt the door re skin also..
Thank you Phillip..I asked on the Australia mg parts forum..fingers crossed chappie said he has one.
I found this picture for coil & horn..is this correct?
Started fiberglass cover for transmission..not keen on ugly box either..
Primed the bumpers.
Unfortunately all singer clubs are a distance & we care for mum next door..
Spent a few hours today trying to locate a battery...you would think the battery experts would know..
Ask on our local forums still no go.
Fingers crossed better luck tomorrow

Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
Now I am waiting on the radiator repair, but hopefully I can let him run in a few weeks.
Your carburettor looks like the 1949 type, in 1950 they already mounted the Solex in our area.

Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
That's the correct set-up for sure!
The 4A did indeed get the Solex carb. The A series from 1946 to 1949 had the 3 speed gearbox and an SU carb.
I see the jack in the photo is the 4AD type. The 4A got the AD jack of this type while the A series had the old pre-war Prima jack.
Hope that helps...

Just FYI, the original gearbox cover was made out of rubber and hugs the same of the gearbox more. It's not a box, if that helps.
The 4AD owner's handbook shows some good illustrations of it if someone has it handy to scan...

We made a cardboard mound for transmission cover.
Neighbor lent fiberglass tools..
Primed & chromed bumper bars.

Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
Great progress! I see you used chrome paint for the bumpers - its very good stuff but doesn't like heat so I wouldn't use it on the radiator surround. I found this out on my Junior although I eventually found a good one I could get nickel plated.
Re: 51 roadster 4a restoration Australia ladies
Thank you Colin...all good will only be driving to shop or around block.
It’s just more of a satisfaction of finishing it sooner.
Not sure I like or will be a fiberglass Person but after a cleanup and more coats..
Will cover running boards in rubber after a sand and undercoat..
