Upholstery - inner linnings

Hi - I am about to cover the door and inner innings - for all of these I have ply backings to mount padding and lining onto. But for the lining of the guards adjacent to the back seat, was the lining material and padding glued directly to the metal or was there a timber backing there as well. Some cars show carpet in this area, which is correct?

The attached photo shows the area I am talking about.

There was a thin strip of ply over the top of the arch, but none over the metal wheel well panel which was covered directly with vinyl.

Thanks.

Looking through my photo file I notice that some cars have piping going all around the door and some only across the top. Also the rear piping may only be on top or come all the way down the door?

Any ideas, or does it matter.

Hope you are staying well over there, so far all is OK here although I do worry about my youngest son, a cardio nurse in a regional hospital - so far and contact. I am fortunate in as much as I have a lot of work to do on my car, without the usual distractions.

Hi Darcy,
The most original upholstery I can find is on this 1 1/2 Sports (Mike's?). It has piping only on the top of the door. Note the split line in the piece above the wheel arch - presumably to aid the 'nesting' of parts during manufacture. It also provides some tolerance to the curvature of the wheel arch.

I put a layer of felt on the side of the wheel arch lightly held in place with a few dabs of adhesive. Note the carpet on the backs of the front seats.

Not a lot to do on the car now. Cannot wait to give it a run. Brian

Darcy,
Looking great.

Despite the wretched shape of my car pre restoration, it had never been monkeyed with and most of the original bits were present.

Above the wheel panel on the body, there are two pieces of vinyl covered ply. Over top of the wheel arch, there is a piece of vinyl covered ply. The panel itself is just covered with vinyl, as are all the panels in the car - no underpadding, as it wasn't a Rolls Royce. All panels are secured with round headed brass screws, no upholstery cups. I have placed each screw in their original locations. The piping behind all panels is strictly a strip of vinyl folded in half and stitched - no cord within, with the exception of the area between the two body panels over the arch and the strip circling the top of the wheel panel. The vinyl on the wheel panel is secured at the bottom with a couple of wood straps which sit under the carpet and the rear cushion sits over top.

There is a piece of ash that goes from one side of the car to the other below the rear seat cushion. The carpet for the back of the foot wells is secured to this like a couple of mud flaps on an 18 wheeler. They are not glued in so the foot wells can be removed if necessary.

The carpet at the door is secure by an aluminum strip folded round with the lower edge screwed to the floor. The carpet just slips into the round-over. I don't know about the sill panel. I suspect it might have been vinyl covered originally or painted. I just varnished mine.

Hope that helps.

Thankyou, I have cut the over arch timber backing as one piece, but I can easily split that into two.

Regarding the piping or rolled over vinyl, the green car seems to have only along the top, somewhere in my memory I was told this is the way, but the red car appears to show it all the way around. I am splitting hairs here, so it probably doesn’t matter.

I have made up my pipping for inside 3.5mm cord, which would be roughly the same as folding the vinyl. I was planning on using 5mm on the outer guards etc.

This is my current status, back seats completed. I think I need to access the carpet next, but first I have to service my wifes bike so she can ride in these days of isolating.

Just a tip, Darcy. I 'feathered' (chamfered?) the edges of the panels and sanded the sharp edges before I wrapped them with vinyl. It gave it a luxury look!

Hi, could someone post a photo of the front foot well carpet arrangement ie around peddles, gear box extension etc. Is it one piece from the seats through the foot well?
