Late 972cc Engine on eBay

Two days to go: it looks as if it has had a rod through it on the driver's side as it is extensively plated but it may interest someone. The problem is of course that you can't tell if it has any cracks in the head. It is definitely a Bantam set up but of course the main castings are common to all nines.

He claims the other item is the dynamo from this engine which looks in quite poor condition.

There is also a gearbox and radiator core that look like they are from the same car. I believe that the later saloon cars had the 'bent-wire' crank and therefore a smaller rear bearing housing with only six bolts rather than eight - perhaps Colin could confirm. Therfore the block and crank is not interchangeable with the sports cars which have the counterbalanced crank.

Yes you are right of course Bill: the Ian Blackburn book confirms that from 1936 the sports cars retained the counterbalanced crank while the saloon cars reverted to the bent wire arrangement. These are not interchangeable. So this engine, which is definitely from a Bantam judging by the manifold, is only useful for the head if you have a sports model (if that isn't cracked of course!). Probably a high risk purchase at this price.

As I recall, the Nine Sports 4 seaters for 1933 and 1934 had the bent wire crank with six blot main rear bearing carrier. The Le Mans had the counterbalanced crank. For 1935 all models - 2 seater, 4 seater and Coupe - were call Le Mans and had the counterbalanced crank. For 1936 I believe the Sports and Coupe reverted to the bent wire crank and the Le Mans 'Special Speed Model' kept the counterbalanced crank. A saloon called the "Super Nine' was produced to use up the remaining counterbalanced cranks and blocks and this did use the special crank and eight bolt rear bearing carrier. That would be a nice find!

My 1935 saloon has a counterbalanced crank along with the dropped chassis.
