4AD stalling
4AD stalling
4AD stalling
when i make a long right hand turn.
only on right hand turn !
fai30 solex carb
carb is clean, i have 2 filters inline.
correct jets, when i got it, the air jet was no 200, i have put in the right one (140?)
float is airtight
float valve i have tried with 1 -2-3 gaskets under, it seem to be worse with one gasket.
manifold and carburettor gaskets are apparently ok, no signs of airleaks.
no problems on starting ,
idle is high
suficient power when driving
any suggestons on where to look ??
kindly

Re: 4AD stalling
are you sure it is stalling because of fuel starvation ? It sounds like you have done it all correctly on the carb. Could it be a loose wire that moves on the right turn to disconnect ignition or fuel pump ? I have no real idea...just thinking out loud.

Disconnect or grounding. Either way, it seems it is unlikely to be a carb issue.

Re: 4AD stalling
thank you for your input.
i should add that the engine is still running when / after stalling, sounds like when running out of petrol,
no power, but after 10 -30 meters it runs perfect again ??
previousley it would stop compleatly, i thought it was the condensator ,
i changed that and all was fine for a while.
i have checked all connections in the engine compartment,
no loose connection under the dashboard - the wires looks fine and tight there.
ignition coil ??
could be, but i have never had a failing ign coil in any of my vintage cars for 40 years.
did someone cast a spell on my Singer ?

Hi,
Another potential scenario; Does the fuel level on the tank has any effect on this behavior? It could also be caused by the fuel moving in the tank during the right turn. I don't quite recall how the internal structure of the tank is, but there might be also be something that is loose inside the tank and that might block the fuel supply during the turn.
Regards,
Pekka

i had the same thoughts, i took of the tank to clean and inspect.
no problem there, suction pipe ca 2 cm above bottom, and clean inside, apart from the usual dust / rust.
on rare occations, engine comes to full stop. starts after a while. that is why i suspected the condensator.
i put in new pump twice.
actually, i doubt that it is a question on the carb. running dry.

What are the conditions when turning right? Turn signal on? Steering wheel turned to the right? Steering column/linkage moved? Does the horn wire pass through the steering column? It sounds like a partial short somewhere - not necessarily in the ignition circuit.

Re: 4AD stalling
I am reminded of when the exact same thing happened to me in my Le Mans. It happened twice, both times whilst crossing the runway at Woodford aerodrome on my way to the flight sheds where I worked and both times on a Friday morning. The second time a plane was about to land Iand I had to be towed off by a very unsympathetic man in a Landrover.
I knew the reason. I was waiting for payday before I could afford to buy petrol. The peritrack turned where it crossed the runway and the camber was sufficient to tilt the fuel away from the suction pipe. No amount of rocking would stop the petrol pump sucking air. Once back on level ground the pump stopped clicking and I made it into work.
Klaus, you say that the suction pipe is 2 cm above the bottom of the tank. That sounds like a lot. Are you sure you are not sucking air?

Re: 4AD stalling
thank you guys,
i belive i have solved the problem.
i found a older model solex, no model name but same bore, that i fitted.
must be a better carb. the car is running far better and faster an inow i can reduce idle speed,
i use it without changing the jets.
the car was still stalling !!
so as you suggested it is not a carb problem but somwhere else.
i bought a electronic ign set on ebay at 40 pounds, : Morris 8 10 Electronic Ignition Kit Negative Earth for Lucas DKY4A Distributor
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Morris-8-10-El ... 2749.l2648
it drops directly in distributor not even nessecary to adjust timing!
it seem to work !!
i am crossing my fingers - after all it is a Singer !!
by the way, how do you see the setting marks for ignition ??
i will use a stroboscope ( i think that is the name in english )
is the 1/4 mark on flywheel the only one ?
thank you all

Re: 4AD stalling
latest update on the stalling engine:
i discovered that the issue were from the ignition / light switch.
i gave it a good spray with contact cleaner, worked it on / of light and the ignition key until it all dried up.
it has worked flawless since the. !
just to be safe i bought a new switch as back up.
my wife and i takes any opportunity for short rides in the neighborhood - it is actually a very nice little car - in spite of all the troubles i gave me in the past : a gear box that was assembled in the wrong way, a timing chain that was 2 teeth out of setting, plus other minor things, all made from the former owner.
to day i believe we had the last trip of this year and are looking foreward to next years happy driving.

Glad you have solved your stalling problem and thanks for letting us know what the problem was. Who would have thought of that?
