Hi Grant,

Well, actually that isn't a Singer gas cap! And the filler tube seems too long out of the bodywork from what I can see.

The Singer cap uses a two eared spring clip that engages two studs in the flange of the filler neck. It is exactly the same design as the oil filler cap on the engine. In fact, they are interchangable, but not the same in detail, so don't swap them!

The Singer caps are a little hard to find and repros were available at one point, but I haven't seen them for sale for quite some time.

Hope that helps...

A couple of years ago, I purchased the gas cap and the filler tube from someone in USA who was breaking a Singer 4AD parts car. The photos are attached herewith. I am not sure whether I got the original stuff. Maybe, Phillip knows better!

Yes! That's the Singer unit for a 4AD!

Great pix!

The earlier style filler neck had a large brass locking ring that threaded the two parts together. The 4AD style used a rubber hose and wire style hose clamps.

The cap should be chrome plated and make sure there is a small vent hole in the center.

Cheers

Hi Phillip,
I have a Series A Roadster which did not have the filler pipe and gas cap when I bought it as the previous owner was using a cap directly on the pipe from the tank (inside the luggage boot). I am planning to replace it with the one I bought (shown in the photos). If I were to use a rubber hose and clamps to connect the filler pipe to the pipe coming out of the tank, is there a possibility of the filler pipe and cap getting lost should the hose break while running? Or is there any attachment for securing the filler pipe to the body of the car, which I am missing?
Alternatively, I can get the 2 pipes threaded and use locking ring nut.
Thanks,
Mohan

Mohan,

I will try to find photos of the original A-series design and see what we can find for you.

Hope that helps!

I found that there is another thread here with better photos of the gas cap, please see the link below.
http://www.forum.singercars.com/viewtop ... f=4&t=1389
(It is mentioned in the post that it is not original and is used in a 4A.)

Hi Mohan,

That thread includes photos from Paul Bouchard, who has an A Series Roadster and a Super Ten, as well as a Le Mans.

The cap he shows in the photos is to the original design - more-or-less - but is a reproduction. We picked some up in the UK a few years ago. As far as I know they are no longer available, but you can check with Arthur Mitchell in the SOC - UK.

The gas cap used on the Singer 4 seater sports cars is the same right through from the '33 Sports all the way up to the last Roadsters. The oil filler cap is also the same size and overall design, but the top pressing is not the same. On the Roadster engines it has "OIL' de-bossed into the top.

The main difference we are talking about is the filler neck that the cap attaches to and the filler tube portion on the tank itself. These are different and as previously mentioned in this thread.

Paul and I chatted about the A tank design as he rebuilt his and has photos of the filler neck. He covered this in an article for NASOC NEWS some years ago. He is looking for photos and will post here when he can.

Hope that helps!

Grant,

This would be a good start for you. Looks like a 4AD style.

I think I sold off the last of my Roadster caps, but will dig around to see what I have.

Mohan, will still try and pull out some photos of the correct A series design...
