Would apply to most Singers with this style of steering:

**1948 Singer 10**

Steering column/box.

This was worn out to the point that the steering wheel would turn nearly half way around before the wheels would start moving.

This steering design is 80+ yrs and simple in design however obtaining new parts for it is close to impossible.

We reconditioned this in house and the only new parts fitted were gaskets and nuts/bolts. The large brass "nut" and the thread inside were worn causing the excessive play.

All the other parts were in good condition and only required a clean and linish. Replacement nuts are not available, we linished the housing so it was round again.

We needed to build up the material on the brass, then machine it down to fit back in the housing with a tighter tolerance.

Next we had to address the wear in the thread, we first heated the shaft and the brass nut, then tinned the surface of the shaft and brass thread, then turned the shaft in and out of the nut untill smooth.

When it was all cooled down, we greased it all up and reassembled and painted. The final product is that we have removed 90% of the play.

Now the owner can drive this with confidence knowing wherever he points the wheel the car will go
