Wheels, road and steering availability

Post by propernoise »

Hello all,

I am restoring a 1957 Turner Sports, a known "parts-bin" car and believe that the steering wheel (white/cream colored) and the steel road wheels (solid disc, no holes, 15") may both be Singer. Is this true? Anyone have spares available?

Thank you,
Ed Sweeney

I would say you are correct, Ed, based on this photo showing both wheel and steering wheel. I'm sure that we have a few members with spare wheels. The steering wheel is another matter.

The steering wheel for the 4A looks the same, and from experience, the Morris Minor MM steering wheel also.
The only problem with the Morris Steering wheel is the centre hole, you ned to fill it up.
But for the time being, during restoration, an MM steering wheel is on my Singer 4A without any extra parts between it.

Hey Ed,

I have steering wheels for the A Series, 4A and 4AB/AC/AD Roadster and all three are different in spoke and rim design. In addition, the center of the A and 4A wheel has a keyway and the 4AB/AC/AD has splines. The Turner wheel seems to have a thicker rim. This design of wheel was used on a large range of British cars during the '50's.

I also have 5 4AD Roadster steel rims in good condition, but, again, I'm not sure the Turner wheels are Singer. It would make sense for a small manufacturer to go with one of the big volume car makers like Austin or Morris, rather than low-volume like Singer. I know many photos of Turners I have seen have wire wheels, or the special alloy wheels they designed. Perhaps this was one of the kit Turners rather than a factory build?

Is this a Turner A30 or A90? I believe the A90 was exported to North America and all of these were Austin based. I suspect that is the source of your parts. Some models used the Coventry Climax engine as well. I would think this is likely an A90 with the Austin A35 engine. A cool car!

Hope that helps!

Hey Again Ed,

BTW, Singer Roadster wheels are 16", not 15".

Cheers,
