STOWE 2018: AN EVEN HOTTER TIME IN THE HILLS!

Post by Phillip »

September 14th to 16th, 2108 saw yet another British Invasion come and go in Stowe, Vermont, along with our annual 'Singer Sensation in Stowe'.

Our theme this year had two sides to it: We showcased our latest 'street furniture', a British police call box and told the story of how they were used. That said, most people now consider a police box to be a TARDIS, the space / time ship used by Dr Who in the long-running BBC TV show, so we explained that also. I was pressed into service to play my best Tom Baker as The Doctor, but the costume was more an homage to Doctors, 4, 10 and 11. I've always been a fan of the show since it started in 1963, so it was a lot of fun to release my inner geek. Temperatures hit 83F during the day, so I was pretty warm in that get-up!

We were not the only Dr Who themed display however, and a couple with a Mini had built a replica Dalek, the sworn enemies of Dr Who, and it won a well-deserved award!

Seven Singers were on the field this year, with many owners, members and friends in attendance. John Lewis attended, but without 'Lizzie', his 4AD, and Bob Tayler was showing his Jaguar XK150 in the concours this time, so his Le Mans stayed home.

The jewel in the crown of our display was the debut of David Kellogg's delectable 1935 Singer Le Mans Sports Coupe, a very original and unmolested example that lived in a California collection for many years. It drew crowds and much interest all day.

Also in the line-up were: Pat and Dee Desmond's 'White Lady' 4AD; Joe and Paula Tarta's black 4AD looking sharp on wire wheels, Rick and Judy Singer's red 4AD; Robert Moreau's famous 'FrankenSinger'; Paul Bouchard's Super Ten Saloon and, "Baby Blue", my own Le Mans SS.

We also had a couple of visitors who actually have Singers and we are hoping they will be joining the club soon.

Due to issues at home, David was not able to get to Stowe in time to organise the rally this year, but it will return next time. Our dinner moved venues from the Golden Eagle Resort to the Grey Fox Inn and many thanks to Pat Desmond for making the arrangements and to Chas and his team for making us so welcome.

Class winners were:
1st Place: Pat & Dee Desmond: 4AD Roadster
2nd Place: David Kellogg: Le Mans Coupe
3rd Place: Phillip Avis: Le Mans Speed Special
Paul Bouchard accepted the "Club Partipation Award" for his excellent replica of the Police telephone box.

Your "Johnny on the spot" looks large enough to be a "two-holer" but judging from the line outside it must just have one facility.

Looks like great fun,
Mark
