The wrong dipstick ?

Can anyone help?
I have a 1935 Singer 9 LM 4 seater with a 1936 engine with a Hardwick alloy finned sump.
I have just changed the oil, but it has only taken about 4 and a half litres to bring it up to the full mark.
Is my dipstick too short ?

My '35 4-seater has the steel sump. The handbook says capacity is 1 gallon which is about 4 1/2 litres. In practice, I have always required slightly less than a gallon. Don't know about Dave Hardwick's alloy sump. If it is the same as the speed model, the capacity is stated as 1 1/2 gallons.

If your dipstick was too short you would be over-filling!
