Rotax E418 generator.

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Rotax E418 generator.

Post by DarcyG »

Hi, the generator I am using comes from one of my two motors and is a Rotax E418. It has afuse at the end per attached, to be on the safe sidedoes anyone know what size the fuse should be? I am assuming from what I can make out that the field Connection is the screw partially screwed out at the right of the fuse holder.

Hey Darcy,

I have a Lucas E418 AL / 0 BP 0 in my collection and it is complete with the charging resistance wires and a field fuse:

This is the field fuse / charging resistance unit:

There is supposed to be a fuse fitted, plus a spare to one side. The old glass Lucas fuse with the paper tracer inside says 35 AMPS.

Cheers,
Phillip

Thanks, as I understand mine had the field wires removed when it was reconditioned and converted. But, after seeing your unit, I am now uncertain where the field and wire connects. Can you assist?

Darcy, I am having the same problems isentifying the terminals on the back of a friends E418 generator. Did you manage to determine what the three terminals are? Presumably they are D, F1 and F2 but which is which?

I happened to buy a Rotax Guide to Singer Electrical Systems and it included some obscure early-30's wiring diagrams, but the most useful was the one for the '33 Nine. Here's the section on the dynamo and cutout, if that helps.

I also have a couple of those half-charge and resistance units so will check if any have the markings on them

BTW, for anyone who has a 1933 Nine Sports, Coupe or Saloon, this harness has differences in colour coding to the '34 harness. I sent the diagram to AutoSparks and they can now supply a harness that matches the actual Rotax diagram if you are a real Anorak (OK - guilty!)

Thanks Phillip. The diagram suggests the terminal sequence is D+, F1, F2 but it would be great to see some actual markings or even what the connections are at the back of the resistance unit. BTW the field fuse is usually 6A and 3/4" long.
