1934 Sports

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Phillip, Peter, Bill and Darcy,

Thank you so much for posting photos of the Nine Sports wood structure. Each of theses images has been wonderfully helpful!

The second of Darcy's photos in the previous entry, with woodwork painted white, shows timbers that appear substantially more robust than on the other cars. Darcy, do you know if there was a specific reason for beefing up the build? I can think of several reasons, but would like to know the restorer's reasons for that decision.

This forum makes me grateful to be a member of the club. Thanks everyone, both for your shared expertise and good will. It helps keep up, or regain, the momentum for working on my own car.

Very Best,

David

Exactly the reason you noted, he wanted to beef up the structure to save on any need for future repairs. No other reason.

Over the week end - having nothing else to do(!) - I found this photo of the ash frame on my car as found. You can see the vertical support in the centre which is the bit that has called so much discussion. Keep the comments coming!

I was generously provided by a UK owner (who was a draftsman) sets of drawings taken from an “original” ‘34 car. I know he has shared them elsewhere and would not mind me doing so. Like all items of this nature care has to be exercised in interpretation as these were taken from an existing, complete car, and as has been said many times, each car is different. But they were invaluable to me as a guide and in terms of getting curves etc correct. However, I also “beefed” up some corners etc to avoid future problems.

I can send via drop box to an email or may be the Board administrators could make available on the site? Let me know.

Latest efforts attached; upholstery now waits until wiring and spraying completed before carpet, hood & tonneau. Tomorrow I WILL finish off bonnet detail  it has taken far too long.

It will be a real stunner with that colour. I used to own an unrestored '33 which was originally ivory and apple green. I was very keen on restoring it, but regrettably had too many others on the go, so I passed it on to a fellow in the southern U.S. While he has made substantial progress, it's still not on the road. Wonderful to see the progress you have made on yours.

My 1934 Sports was originally apple green and ivory and is slated to be the same again after receiving a respray in green.

I know some are not keen on these pastel shades from the 1930's, but they are a reflection of the cultural tastes of the time that the cars were made.

Thanks for all the encouragement!! It certainly helps to keep the pot on the boil especially during the cold winter months in UK when working temperatures are too low for common sense :(
When I bought the remains of the car it was painted red. Liz did not like that idea so we checked with the SOC and the original colour scheme was ivory body tub and wheels, apple green wings and green upholstery...the colours she would have chosen! We found remnants of the paint colours as we stripped back to bare metal; so everyone (nearly  ) is happy.

We just got another dump of snow yesterday. I'm sure the UK is balmy by comparison.

Yes it probably is Peter; but living in the north of the country we do have colder weather than some! There's a fresh lot of snow on the mountain at the head of the valley

This is certainly a different project from your last.. but still in tne same spirit.
If I recall correctly, you built the 2 litre 'Fox and Nichols 'evocation and had some great driving adventures in it over the years.

This one was apple green with ivory wings! The boy on the back seat is now 97 years old and remembers the car well as his father bought it new in 1934. The photo was taken on Bwlch y Groes, North Wales - a much used trials hill in the '30s
Well done for remembering our previous car which is now being enjoyed by another enthusiast. That was definitely a young man's car and when you've been caught in a thunderstorm on a motorway you'll know what I mean!!
So this one is a bit different, but there's a bit more room for luggage (and us) on Continental trips hopefully....and it is still a six cylinder!!!! But it also has a hood & full width windscreen
