As these cars, (52 Singer 4AD) are positive ground. When doing a bench test on the starter, one would put the black (NEG) cable to the screw terminal on the starter and the red (POS) cable to the starter casing ?
And if I needed to replace the starter, does anyone know of the crossover to a different model to search for it ?

Re: Starter bench test
A short test on that way gives enough information for the basic condition.
In most of the times, repairing from the starter is not a big issue, mine from the 4A has the same parts as the Morris Minor starter, and you can buy it on the well known Ebay.
When all is moving, and no heavy rust on the moving parts, check the brushes and bearings, clean and grease him, and use him.
Search on: Lucas Starter End, and you find them
