Running board strips

Here are the dimensions of the original running board rubber. I would call these approximate simply due to age and shinkage, but should be close:

ABOVE: Basically 1/2" across the top ribbed part, 3/4" across the bottom part and 3/8" high.

ABOVE: Here's the profile of the repro rubber. As you can see, it only has a very slight version of the top ribs. At least this shows the cross-section and where the steel fixing strip slides in.

Thanks Phillip. That helps a lot. I sent the following drawing to three suppliers and asked for quotes. It looks like 50 metres is the minimum quantity. At, say, 4 metres per car That should be enough for 12 cars.

To avoid problems with corrosion I have made the slot for the metal large enough to accept 15 x 3mm stainless bar. This is readily available from Metals4U and is a lot cheaper than brass. I plan to drill the bar and use M5 stainless screws to hold it in place. I will keep you posted when I get prices.
Still thinking about the chrome end caps. The ones from Vintage Supplies are looking attractive.

The running boards rubber sample has arrived! It is in 70-shore EPDM (similar hardness to car tyre) and looks great. It looks close to the original sample that Phillip showed.

If anybody wants some I suggest that they PM me. The price will be about £10 per metre.

As this is is the same section as used on Roadsters I will post in that section also, if thats OK with you Mr. Moderator?

Whilst things are a bit quiet I thought I would show how the running board tread project has gone.
I drilled the stainless strip and after drilling the running boards to suit I silver soldered 5mm SS studs in the strip.

I made the end caps from a combination of solid brass and 1mm thick sheet silver soldered together. I considered forming them from sheet, like the originals, but wanted a firmer method of holding them down so I drilled and tapped them M5.

After plating, this was the final result:

I still have plenty of the rubber section left so anyone wanting any please join the queue (line) on the left - just behind the one for copper head gaskets

Yes, that will teach me to take an angle grinder to the 1 1/2. I tripped over the plug on the extension lead. It hurt like hell at the time but remarkably little pain at the moment - although I think the drugs are beginning to wear off! Thanks for all your good wishes and here is a picture to be going on with.
