fuek tank filter 4A

Does someone have a trick to open the filter behind this pipe?
With my Morris Minor it was easy, a bit cleaner in the tank, and 8 bar on the fuel line for a day and he was open.
But this one was dry since 1968, and only give some drips when I put 0,1 BAR on the tank.
Not enough for the fuel pump to bring some petrol to the carburettor...

My own experience is that you have to drop the tank and clean it all out with hot water, solvents and whatever you have. If you try and fix the just the filter, the gummy residue from old fuel which is probably lining the tank will continue to feed into the system and stop the engine. I also replaced all the fuel lines.

As you can see, the fuel lines are already new, but from inside the tank looks clean.
With the Morris I used Forte Tank cleaner, a few years ago, and this for 2 tanks, and drive the tank complete empty before filling again.
But it is easier to run a Morris empty with an electric pump, just have a can with you and wait till the electric pump stops clicking before try to start again :D

If you are sure its otherwise clean I'd disconnect the fuel line, take off the filler cap and give it a blast through the outlet with an airline. If that doesn't shift it I don't know what will.

Problem solved. I took all the petrol and cleaner out, also the tank meter from the top and drove to a point with a pressure washer.

when finished, I took my small burner and heated the outlet from inside and outside, I just could reach him through the hole.
After he was hot enough, air pressure again and open was he :D
On the picture you can see the end of the pipe, the gummy residue is burned now.
Because the tank is not very rusty inside, I let him dry complete and maybe small stones inside to get all the rust out.
People in my area are using a concrete mixer for that job, but maybe this tool is a bit heavy.

I would highly recommend against anyone heating up an old gas tank in this fashion. It may seem clean and dry, but gas vapours can still leech out and become highly combustible within the tank. Don't do it!

That's the reason I first cleaned him with the pressure-washer, not only from the outside :D
I started with the inside by putting the head in the tank, don't be afraid for some water spraying back..
With the tank full of hot water, no petrol is in there any more.

For sure, I never use fire with a not cleaned tank :mrgreen:

My experience too as I noted earlier - a good pressure clean is the only way to ensure a continuous supply of fuel when a tank has been left with petrol in for a long period of time.

pressure cleaning with hot water was not enough, the final touch was the burner . After some heating, a flame came out of the pipe, the residue was started burning.
After a while it was over, and hot enough to blow out with air.
Never expect that way should be the solution, I almost started dismantling the tank :shock:
