Jaeger speedometer

Anyone have any tips on disassembly of the pre war Jaeger speedometer. My mileage indicator has given up the ghost.

I think its a black art Peter. I have always sent my speedos (not my swimming trunks I hasten to add) to a specialist.

Hi Peter
Screws around the bezel ,these would normally be hidden by the wood if in the dash. these remove the bezel and the glass. Then a couple from the back to remove outer case.

Thanks David. I think I found all the screw but it still wouldn't budge. Is it necessary to remove the needle before it comes apart.

I have a speedo from a rolled car without the dial / needle, bits of one with a trip meter and a working one.
By looking at the bits sequence is bezel with glass off the front.
two screws ,plus any washers on the threaded studs (weird thread) from the rear.
outer case should then come off toward the cable drive.

If your speedo is a total goner I have a 5 inch speedo with Trip and odometer, 1600 TPM but with a gold face. You would have to swap the face with yours It is of the moving magnet type not the old chronometric,

Thanks Steves. Very good information. While it pertains to 1960's and up, the construction appears to be similar to the 30's gauge. I removed all the relevant screws but the works would not budge, probably due to corrosion or crud. I just didn't want to force it for fear of breaking it.

I have local guy repairing my speedo. After its time in Malaysia all the rubber components had melted . I too have problem with the odometer. Paul think he can tweek the ratchet over slightly to avoid the worn egde of the wheel.

Thanks for the photos. According to these I have removed everything I need to remove, but it won't budge. With respect to the needle, does it just pull off?

Hi Peter

In theory the needle just pulls off as it is only held on with friction. In practice it rarely does.
I use a pair of bent pliers which allow you to get a push from behind and this always works, although you need to protect the face where you lever against

As always ther's a proper tool for doing the job! Pity you're not nearer or you could borrow this one designed for small clocks & Pocket watches.
