Distributor Repairs

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Distributor Repairs

Post by Peter McKercher »

Just received my distributor after a rebuild by the Distributor Doctor. By this time in their lives , these units will have had many fingers into them, effecting repairs and adding non standard bits that impact their performance. Mine is now back to standard with factory parts, fully refurbished, refinished, looking and performing as new. The Distributor Doctor did a marvellous job. Thanks also to Colin Britt for bringing the good doctor to my attention through his ongoing restoration posts. And while I'm at it, thanks to our webmaster Mike Rambour for creating and maintaining this forum without which the sharing of ideas and information on our hobby would be infinitely more difficult.

It looks like a good job Peter! The proof will be in the running but the distributor they rebuilt for my Coupe works really well.

Given the issues it had, I don't think there is any doubt there will be a significant improvement. I just wish we weren't getting a big dump of snow tonight, or I'd probably have it out.

Hi Peter,

That distributor looks ridiculously well done. Wow!

When I finally got to work on CRL157, which meant attacking the grime accumulated since the 1979 restoration of the car by Malcolm Crump, I discovered that there was an ID plate on the distributor.

Can you imagine my surprise when I saw this on a car built in 1936?

Do you have contact information for Distributor Doctor?

Thanks,

I have heard mixed reviews on going electronic, which is why I opted to get mine fixed. I had my first opportunity to try it out yesterday and I am very pleased with the results. Smoother idle and settles down quicker between shifts.

I spoke to the Doctor about this and he told me that electronic ignition will not overcome issues with a distributor, so you need to get it fixed first anyway. After that it will work perfectly so in my view I wouldn't want to mess with it.

Yes, that's what he told me as well. The electronic ignition dispenses with the points, but it doesn't resolve loose bushings, worn drive gears and loose advance components.

What i often experience with classic ignition is condenser failure. They seem to be less and less reliable. Switching to electronic cures this, once your distributor is mechanically sound. They do also fail though.

Modern replacement rotor arms have also caused me considerable trouble in the past. On one trip to Italy with the 2 litre we used 5 and eventually went back to the old one which was in the distributor when we pulled it out of the hedge nearly 40 years ago!!! It just shows....NEVER throw anything away....is a good motto :D
