In an article celebrating Weekend Heroes volume II on racing in America the April edition of The Automobile has reproduced a picture of Peter McKercher's roadster being challenged by a Ferrari 166MM.

I'd love to take credit for that one, but it looks like Tony got his wires crossed when he labelled that photo. That's actually Bill Quinn. While I had actually logged a few miles in a Singer Le Mans by the time of that race, I was only a one year old. The date on the race is also incorrect. It was 1951.

In fairness, Tony's research has always focused on the over 1500cc races. However, the real roots of sports car racing in North America are in the under 1500cc cars that people drove to the races, raced and usually drove home. There weren't many big names at these events, although this is where Phil Hill and Ken Miles both earned their stripes. This period was very brief, from around 1949 to 1953, when money and prestige began to be the dominant influences.

Tony says that Automobile magazine took some liberties with the captioning. His book has the correct information.
