Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
I bought myself a Singer Nine Sports. According to the VIN code the car was delivered to the Netherlands in 1933.
It could be the car that was present on the RAI in Amsterdam in 1933 and maybe it is the car that was seen at Schiphol.
I'am still in the process of collecting missing parts. The first thing on the list is to let the engine run again.
I just put some pictures here. I love to watch pictures of other cars so here are mine

When the original are there, it is possible to copy gearbox parts.
Years ago I did this with an old agriculture machine, that guy was also rebuilding gearboxes for the Paris - Dakar rally.

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
Hi "Fongers'
Here's a photo of the clutch release assembly on my 1933 Nine Sports, which is an identical car to your 1933 RAI photo...
This bell-housing has been fully rebuilt using a new cross-shaft, as well as bushing in the alloy casting.
BTW, the clutch conversion uses a Borg & Beck pressure and driven plate, the same type used on the MGA and Singer 4AD. You need to remove the input shaft from the Singer gearbox and machine off the shaft just behind the splines. You then need to use an old input shaft off a vehicle that uses the same type of splines as used on the new driven plate (an MGA would be one option) and weld it onto the Singer input shaft.
Another option is to have a new input shaft made for the Singer gearbox designed for use with the Borg & Beck clutch. The flywheel also has to be drilled to take the new clutch cover bolts.
I have left my cars fitted with the original Singer Newton clutches as they are quite easy to take apart and rebuild, although they are not as smooth as the Borg & Beck conversion!
Hope that helps!
Any chance of getting a large hi-rez version of the 1933 photo at the RAI to study?
Cheers,
Phillip

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
Hi Philip
Thanks for your info. This is very helpfull. I have all the items for a B&B conversion.
However I will be changing the internal amount of splines of the clutchplate to 6.
So I can reuse the original pressure plate and don't have to change the flywheel.
Maybe in future I will change this.
I have to make this clutch fork myself. I will be posting more photo's as soon as things are ready

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
I should check what the difference is between this one and the one for the Morris Minor MM, it looks like the difference is not so big?

Hi Teake
Thanks, Do you know who can provide that MM clutch fork?
@Philip
The picture of the Singer on the car exhibition in Amsterdam (RAI 1933) is from http://www.conam.info/images/stories/im ... lebert.jpg

Gearboxes from the sidevalve morris are often on Ebay, I sold my spare gearbox when I finished the car...

Thanks for the link fongers.
It's a fantastic photo and shows a lot of original detail, including the super-rare starting handle hole plug fitted on the stone guard. This was used on the sports cars that did not have a badge bar.

I love any period photos of these cars. So much can be learned from studying the details!
Interesting to see the spare wheel cover on it in this photo.

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
Hello Fongers,
Welcome to these pages! May they prove to be a source of good information and fine friendship.
Was the distinctive hard cover for the spare wheel, shown in the photograph near the airport, still on the car when you received it? This detail, being so uncommon, could go a long way toward identifying whether the two cars are in fact the same.
Very Best of Luck with your restoration.
Regards,
David

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
Hi David
The spare wheel cover and also the special hole for guiding the starter handle has been lost over time.
It looks like the spare wheel cover has the same color as the wings and wheels (could have been red also)
But to keep you satisfied here an old picture of Singers in front of the Peace Palace in the Hague I hope to start the restoration shortly. But still collecting parts etc. and waiting for warmer weather.

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question
I suspect the full-faced spare wheel cover may have been a soft one -canvas similar to the hood perhaps?
Singer offered a metal spare wheel cover, but it was open in the center and basically just covered the tyre. It was made up of two halves with a band that went around it. I've seen it on Coupes mostly and on one four seater. Probably an aftermarket made by Breeden or one of the other accessory suppliers. The '35 LM Sports 4 seater came with a half cover as standard, which completely covered the spare wheel and was also made by an outside supplier.
