Removing rear bearings from axle LM / Roadster

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Removing rear bearings from axle LM / Roadster

I give up - how do you separate (easily) the rear bearing carrier from the rear axle? on a 1933 /34 LM / Roadster (tappered axle).

Take it to a machine shop and have them press it out. The last one I had separated took about 500 lbs pressure and sent the axle flying across the room. There was no way I could do it myself without destroying the carrier.

machine shop...bah, that is no fun...

I doubt you can remove them without a press, if you try you may damage things. But you don't need a expensive press, mine is a cheap Harbor Freight press and (I know you dont have one nearby but there has to be a similar store) and it did the job just fine.

If you have some GOOD welding skills you could take a bearing puller and weld up some very long arms for it but a cheap press is so useful for a thousand other things in the car.

Mikey - I'm with Jason. The way that axle flew across the room when it let go was pretty awesome.

I think I will take it to the local garage - my welding is not that great - thanks folks.

I thought you might be interested in knowing that Martyn Wray of the SOC recently took his '33 Nine Sports Coupe axles to the machine shop to have them extracted from their respective hubs - 10 tons pressure to remove one side, 15 tons to do the other.
