BEN, The Allied Trades Benevolent Fund’, located in the UK, is a charity created to support those who work, or have worked, in the automotive and related industries, or their dependents. One of the ways they raise money is with their annual themed Christmas cards.
What is really interesting here is that their ‘Artist in Residence’ is none other than Richard Wheatland, SOC member and Singer owner. It’s only natural, then, that Singers feature in Richard’s work. He has also produced cards for the SOC as an insert to the Singer Owner magazine.
I have to say I am a great admirer of Richard’s work. I started my career as a Graphic Designer and had my first scribbling printed in ‘Old Motor & Vintage Commercial’ as a child back in 1966, so appreciate the skill, accuracy and detail that Richard puts into his work.
Richard has been painting and drawing since childhood, but followed in his Father’s footsteps in the family engineering business as a ‘day job’. His first professional showing was at Brooklands in 1982, a wonderful place to start!
Richard’s work has becoming increasingly in demand with collectors around the world and there is even an original of a Jaguar D type hanging in the office of our own NASOC President, Paul Bouchard!
