Do any have the part numbers for the start motor and dynamo.
Can I use starter/dynamo from a other car , eg Morris minor or MG ?
Its for a Singer Roadster 1948

Re: Starter and Dynamo
Michael,
The 9 HP Roadster dynamo & starter numbers are:
DYNAMO: C45PV (1946-1949), C39PV (1950-51)
One thing to consider if using parts from another car (and they may be compatible) is that the Roadsters are positive ground.
STARTER: M35G L
Also check the number of teeth in the ring gear. The ring gear on the A and 4A are different so the starter dog is also.
From the info that I have, the same Dynamo and Starter were used on the Morgan 1948-50 Plus 4.

Thanks Paul.
Do you know if the startmotor is a CW or a CCW model.
I have found a M35 G startmotor but its a CW , and Im not sure if it the right one.
It have 3 mounting holes , I belive this i right.

Re: Starter and Dynamo
Michael,
With the crank turning clockwise on the A (4A) the starter should be opposite or counter clock-wise. There area couple of factors to consider:
Given that the car is negative ground, the MG starter that you have may turn CCW but will the starter gear engage? It is the spinning action of the starter that engages the gear so if it is not turning in the right direction then it will spin... but not engage with the ring gear.
The number of teeth too are important. David Andreassen's "Singer Data Book" indicates 9 teeth for the "A". The "A" starter is also the model with the 3 mounting holes. The 4A has the "bump" on the block casting for the middle hole, but it is not drilled and tapped.
Good luck!

Re: Starter and Dynamo
All,
I have converted my Sunbeams from positive ground to negative ground and never have had a problem with the starter. It is not polarity sensative. The generator is but just repolarize it. The only changes are the generator as mentioned, the ignition coil swap terminal leads, and ammeter lead swap.

Re: Starter and Dynamo
The problem that I have is the starter I have found turning CW , and I need it to turn CCW .
Any know if it is possible to convert it to turn CCW ?
I also have a generator , with the arrow on the body showing it to turn CW .
Is it possible to convert this to run CCW ?

Re: Starter and Dynamo
Michael,
I emailed a friend of mine who rebuilds starters and alternators for a living. Here is his reply.
"The armature and drive are different as well as the brush locations,( off by 90 deg's) It is actually a different starter."
