I put the required 7 1/2 pints of oil in the engine today that the manual says on my 1952 4AD and the dip stick shows about half way between "half" and "full". Is this the requred amount or is the dip stick wrong?
thanks

Re: Oil capacity
Steve,
The 4AD takes around 5 US Quarts. I believe they are quoting Imperial Pints.

Re: Oil capacity
Thanks for the reply. It came to me later when I remembered how big those "pints" were when I was over in England a few times.

Re: Oil capacity
Off topic but ...
England has adopted the metric system now, people still use old imperial system on different things but it is the law that all product prices need to be stated per kilogram, metre and so on.
But there is one exception, beer can still be sold per pint.
I wonder if the US will ever go into the metric system?

Re: Oil capacity
As I work through the details of my 52 4AD engine rebuild, the dipstick has been repaired several times (broken and brazed back together) and looks like a straightened pretzel. My assumption is that an OEM replacement is nonexistent, but someone might just have one in good condition. If not, I simply plan on making one, but can't trust the old one to use as a pattern. Does anyone have, or can measure, the dimension from the "add" and "full" lines to the stop on the stick that rests on the engine block. My stick is so bad that I don’t even know what the markings are at the tip.
Thanks and have a great day!

Re: Oil capacity
Full is 8" down, Half is 9 1/4" and the end of the stick is 11". By the way, The loop extends 2 1/2 inches above the block and is 1" diameter(OD).
Good Luck,

Re: Oil capacity
Hey Mark,
Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I need!
The engine is coming together quite nicely; the head is now in place, timing is done, and working the final details before I paint the entire assy. After that, I can fit all the other pieces and install it into the frame!
Thanks again,
Fred
