34 2-Seater seats

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

34 2-Seater seats

Post by mikeyr »

So, I am doing this way prematurely but I found a guy by accident (his son works on campus where I work) who used to own a shop and now does upholstery in his garage, he is getting old and wants to retire so while i am not ready for it, I am going to do my interior now.

I have all the bits from Hardwick for the 2-seater seat back and I see his drawings but he is not clear on the back itself. There is a "chamfer" at the top for something that he shows but gives no measurements for.

Also, on the back there are 3 pieces of wood attached to the back itself, one at each end and one in the middle but he does not give sizes for those either. He also does not give me a height of the plywood back, I can guess that one when I build it but i really don't know how the seats go so I may guess wrong.

I also need to make the seat bottoms, but no ideas on shape/size of those, I will go with foam and not try to find a bladder as it was originally. I have no track, I assume there was none since the back had the adjustments, is that right ?

My car had no seats or even remnants of seats, so no idea what I am getting into but it looks simple enough.

I also need to make door cards and that part should be easy, I have looked here on the forum and found pictures with and without map pockets in the doors, which is correct ?

Going to make floor boards this weekend, never had those either, but those look like I can guess them pretty well.

Door pockets are correct. I think you have enough shots of everything else with what I sent. Hard to measure the seat back accurately with upholstery on, but I'll try.

Can you scale the size from these photos (on the forum)? I imagine the actual size is not too critical.

That seat back looks different than others I have seen and also in pics sent to me by Peter. I have not seen one with wood across the top and bottom but it sure would stiffen up back very nicely. Peter has sent me lots of pics and none show that part, I will experiment. First I have to cover the sides of the body with 1/8" or 1/4" ply (undecided which) since that will take up some space. I had forgotten that part until I saw a pic this morning, it would be really bad to make the back fit and then add those and have it not fit.

And I am working on scaling, since Dave Hardwick in his drawings says the back is 1/2" and the wood pieces are 1", assuming that I can scale it. I also imagine you are correct, its not critical, the upholstery will cover a lot of mistakes but not all, I imagine that within reason, this is a plus or minus 1/2" type job.

Does anything go here to the top bar or is the seat the only thing.

Yes I know there is a floor to put in just wondering if this is closed off or available from inside the car.

I imagine you need access to change the oil in the rear differential. This is the arrangement in the rear of my 1930 Six with a hole in the floor over the diff that will have a removable metal cover over it followed by a removable seat base. Different car I know but the principle may hold.

Here are a few shots of mine. Note in the 2nd shot there is a piece of wood screwed down to retain the lower edge of the partition. This appears to be a plywood strip on your car. It's ash on mine. The partition is covered in vinyl both sides. Also, wheel arches have vinyl covered card. The third shot shows a ring to lift the boot bottom out to access shocks and filler.

Thank you I did not word my question very well. I was asking if there is a vertical board from where my hand was up to the bar across the body. Peter’s pictures show there is. So a few more things to make. Have to get most of this done in next few days to give the upholstery guy an idea of what is needed for a proper quote. Then I will have time to detail things out before he starts (assuming price is good).

Guess I am going with black leather. He has a lot left and since he is closing up he is willing to give me the leather at his cost a few years ago ( really cheap ) Once he sees the car he may have other odd colors to offer as he wants to use up his stock.
