Singer National Day - June 2008

Post by Paul Bouchard »

Just back from Singer National Day in the mother country!

The hospitality of everyone there was fantastic. We all felt very welcomed and were accorded a special mention at Saturday's dinner along with NASOC member Bruce Maycock and son Geoff from Victoria BC. After supper we could not help but take a tour of the hotel parking lot. A mini show in itself!

Sunday was the show and what a beautiful day it was! The sun was out in its glory and, well, the cars! The show started off very well with each of us getting rides from the hotel in some very fine vehicles. I accompanied John Dowding in his beautifully restored 1948 Super Ten. Phillip Avis rode in our "usual" car, Colin Borley's 1928 Senior Saloon. Eugene Abbondelo was in 7th heaven zipping along in Nick Warren's 1935 LM 4 seater.

Around 90 singers in attendance at the Waddeson Manor in Buckinghamshire, England with the majority of them pre-war. Let's just say that our Pre-war Registrar (Phillip) and new LM Longtail owner (Eugene) were in heaven! 10 2-seater LMs and 14 4-seaters! I was all over the Super Ten and took a tour of some of the models that we do not normally see over here. Bicycles, a motor cycle and some of the really early cars!

The star of the show was not a car, but SOC member Corrine Davies. Corrine has been a SOC member for some time and has a 1936 Nine Coupe with dickey seat (rumble seat) as well as several Gazelles. We sat with Corrine for supper on Saturday and she regaled us with her stories of life and Singers. She had all of us in stitches. She also made quite the impression with the evening''s entertainment (a Murder Mystery) who included her in their show.

We must also thank Jim & Margaret Kenniston as well as Bill and Sandie Haverly who were kind enough to open up their houses to the three weary travelers from the west.

Here are a few select photos:

Brian Hogan discusses the finer points of owning a 4-seater LM with fellow 4-seater owner Eugene Abbondelo. NASOC Pre-war Registrar and Editor can only watch and think how that lovely blue '35 LM 4-seater would look next to his '36 LM Speed Special!
