Stowe 2007 edition

Post by Paul Bouchard »

NASOC's National Meet as part of the British Invasion is drawing near. With the success of the Mid-America meet, we would like to invite you all to the fun at Stowe.

This year will see a return of the "Ballam Run". Ed has graciously volunteered to build on his drive through the picturesque countryside of Stowe. We will be hosting the NASOC Gala Evening at the Golden Eagle Resort so bring your appetite and break bread (or pizza dough) with new and old friends.

Pre-registration for the British Invasion is mandatory and all the information can be found at http://www.britishinvasion.com . Also, please advise us if you plan to attend.

We will be updating the NASOC board as the event draws near.

Stowe & the Golden Eagle

Post by djcraig »

I spoke with the Golden Eagle front desk yesterday . . .they were able to relocate us old folk to a room on the first level to accomodat Liz's iimpending hip replacement surgery the following week. (Nothing will keep her from meeting up with all of you Singerites on that weekend!!!).
As you know the Triumph Herald is gone and we will be sporting our "Award Winning" Singer Gazelle with it's newly fitted Robbins hood (. .uh, well, top).
Anyway, the lady at the resort asked me to let you all know that they are sold out for the Invasion Weekend.
I'd love to hear from other Gazellers who might participating in or attending the show.

Dave,

WE WILL REMEMBER TO SPEAK REALLY LOUD TO YOU SO THAT YOU "OLD FOLK" CAN HEAR WHAT IS GOING ON.

Great to hear that your plans have been set. The Golden Eagle is a great spot for the show. This is year 7 or 8 for me... gosh, I can not remember. Perhaps everyone will have to speak loud to me too!

See ya there!

Well with less than 4 weeks to go, we are getting the ball rolling!

Stowe, and events like it, are a great opportunity to get together with other Singer owners, see other Singers and swap stories of triumph! (not the marque)

This year will see the official return to the "Ballam Run". NASOC member Ed Ballam put together a fun run a couple of years ago and has volunteered to plan another drive through the Stowe countryside. We stop at a park in the area for a picnic lunch so pack your own or share with the rest. Everyone is welcome and there are spaces in cars for those without a Singer. There is always plenty to go around.

We also have plans for a "Gymkana" event that will take place Sunday morning. This car-related event will not tax your car, but may tax your ability to keep a keen eye on the "prize"... as long as your prize is the chance to have some fun.

NASOC East-Coast Regional Meet
Schedule of Events

Friday Sep 14:

The Ballam Run

Where: Golden Eagle Resort, 1867 House parking lot

10:00 - 10:30 Meet and greet.
10:30 - 11:00 Photo Op & Drive prep
11:00 Departure
12:00 - 1:00 PM Picnic Lunch
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (or so) Drive around Stowe and return to Golden Eagle

British Invasion Registration

Where: Show Field (Weeks Hill Road)

After the Ballam Run, you may choose to proceed directly to the Show Field to register. A British Invasion reception & cocktail party takes place from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

For those not participating in the Ballam Run, you may register and/or sign in for the British Invasion up to 6:00 PM.

No other official NASOC events are planned for the rest of the day.

Saturday Sep 15:

British Invasion - Day 1

Where: Show Field (Weeks Hill Road)

9:00 - 5:00 PM British Invasion! Singers will be there in force once again. If you have not been to Stowe before, or do not have your Car Information Sheet, then please send some info on your car to either Phillip or Paul so one can be prepared for you.

NASOC East-Coast Regional Meeting.

Where: Golden Eagle Resort Conference Room

6:30 PM - ???? Join us for dinner! Nothing too fancy, pizza and coffee. Do bring your own beverages. We will have a set-up to see photos of the day as well as have a chance to chat without being asked if "Singers are made by the same company as the sewing machine" every 5 minutes or so. There will be a nominal charge for pizza and the room. Fun is at no charge.

Sunday Sep 16:

British Invasion - Day 2

Where: Show Field (Weeks Hill Road)

Those interested in the Tailgate Competition (Ed?) will be there. We will also have our first and hopefully annual NASOC Gymkana. No early birds for this one, we will get started around 10:30 or so and be done around lunch.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Dave,

We already have you on the list. We used ink because we were so sure that you would be there. We still want anyone else attending to let us know what your plans are. Besides you Dave, we have confirmation from Ed Ballam, Bob Stewart, Gene Abbondelo, Robert Morreau, Dave Norton (sans car), Lori Seller and Dad (also sans car), Len Pearcey (another sans car) Phillip Avis and myself. that makes for 6 cars so far... We suspect that Peter Mckercher, Kenlis Pearce and Rick Meade will also be there, hopefully with their cars.

If all this works out, we can expect 10+ cars and 13+ members. It is still not too late to register or attend! There were 8 or so at Mad Dogs when a couple of surprises arrived! Always expect the unexpected! In the end, cars are always nice, but the ability to meet and greet fellow enthusiasts is the real treat.

Last year also saw NASOC winning the Club Participation Award, the first one at Stowe. We do not know what the other clubs are up to, but rest assured that just like the duck, Phillip and I have been busy getting prepared for Stowe.

We still want to hear from anyone planning to attend and do let us know if you will be bringing your car and if so, give us some details. We will make you a car display sheet with your car's story, and we know that they all have one!

Looking forward to see you & Liz. Oh, and the Gazelle.

Dave,

Oh my goodness! How did that photo get in there? I will have a long discussion with the person responsible for allowing that one to get by the censors! I guess that it was the smile that made their hearts melt.

More & better censored "bling" to come...

Fellow Singerites!

The Stowe train is about to leave the station. I am heading out tomorrow (Thursday) around mid-day to Singer Central (aka Golden Eagle Resort). Robert will head out on Friday in his newly unveiled A Series. Ed is driving from New Hampshire on Friday followed (closely) by Gene Abbondelo towing his newly acquired Le Mans 4 Seater. Another first will be Dave Craig with his Gazelle. First timers at Stowe with their cars will include Kenlis Pearce and Rick Meade. We are looking forward to see you and your cars. Rick's looks quite fetching.

Like always, there will be surprises. We really do not know who will show up until the day starts.

We will try to get updates to the site as the event unfolds. This will depend highly on the availability of the "hotel computer".

So long for now!

Greetings from Stowe!

We have just wrapped up the East-Coast Regional Meet and Singer Owners and NASOC Members are milling about chatting. Our annual dinner is simply a few slices of pizza but it is the atmosphere that is priceless.

This year's event was full of, well, events! Most surrounding Ed Ballam, but several other members played roles. Things started with a bang and Friday was not without its problems. By Saturday everything was running like a top. Pity that Mother Nature decided to unload rain on us. Luckilly our Pit Display and tents kept os fairly dry.

Singers were very well represented with 10 cars and 13 members. the rain was NOT going to put a damper on the spirit (yes the pun was intentional).

So with our supper done and members moving towards the exit, we bid you all good night!

My last post was made from the Golden Eagle Conference room just as the meeting was drawing to a close. Thenks to Grahame PEarce for connecting to the internet and allowing me to jot those quick words down to share with you .

From all reports received so far, all have made it safe and sound.

This year's event saw many firsts:

- Rick Meade and son Derek showed up in their 1950 4A. Rick won 3rd place in the Singer classification! Well done. Rick's car has been in the family since 1960 when his father purchased it for $35.

- Kenlis Pearce's 54 4AD arrived UNDER ITS OWN POWER. Kenlis "rolled out" his 4AD at Ottawa this year and this was its first "powered" showing.

- Gene Abbondelo's recent acquisition (1935 Le Mans 4 Seater) was also there making for three pre-war cars. Soon we may see a separate class for them!

- Dave & Liz Craig arrived in their 1959 Gazelle. Dave just could not be Singerless for long, and it was great to see them both again at Stowe... in the correct class!

- Robert Moreau DROVE his 1948 "A" from Terrebonne to Stowe. A 4+ hour drive on a car unveiled just 2 days prior. Now that takes... confidence. Robert's first show with his Roadster was rewarded with the Concours D'Elegance's People's Choice award!

From a numbers perspective, we equaled Stowe from 2005 as well as Mad Dogs & Englishmen this year. The numbers are great and combine that with the fact that more and more members too are participating even without their cars. This just shows that Singer Spirit runs high.

The Boys in White were also there in force! Robert, Kenlis, Grahame, Phillip and myself braved the wet (and muddy) weather and sported our now infamous costumes on a rainy Saturday show day. Sunday saw Kenlis and Grahame leave rather early for home so it was left to Robert, Phillip and me. Peter brought his too for the awards presentation where his 1934 Sports took first place again this year.

The Ballam Run was canceled this year due to the, well, technical problems that popped up on Friday. Just to quench any fears, everyone is ok and all cars made it home (or to their trailers) under their own power.

Ed started things off by loosing a rear wheel not 1/2 a mile from the Golden Eagle. He was just about to turn onto Mountain Road and POP. Gene Abbondelo was following behind in his tow rig and was able to keep traffic at bay until the police arrived. Lucky for Ed (lucky??) a local British Car Restorer was near by and quickly called for a jack. He was also a part-time police officer in Stowe and had a unit sent to assist. Grahame Pearce was also first on the scene and quickly passed the word on to those gathered for the run with a "Singer Down" code call. The response was quick and 4 of us piled in my van with trailer attached. We arrived to see Ed and his 3-wheeled Roadster still in place. Traffic was stopped to allow me to get my trailer into position and with a floor jack (as well as a few people lifting and winching) were able to get Ed's car on the trailer and back to Singer Central HQ. All four wheel studs had sheered off the axle! Let this be a lesson to be sure that your lug nuts are tightened! Ed was able to get back home for that night to collect a replacement half-shaft (with studs) and it was replaced before the show started on Saturday.

With the run delayed until 2008, some members went to the show field for registration. While there, Gene's car had fuel trouble. There is no need to specify which "Gene" since both the Abbondelo and Mulder cars were down. Gene A's Le Mens was suffering from what seemed to be a major problem with vapour lock. Some tweaking and relocating the pump solved this. Gene M was also having fuel problems, but it was his pump that stopped working. Another was fetched and the car back on the road.

While on the subject of fuel... Robert Moreau was unable to start his car on Sunday. After an extensive search for the problem it was determined that a lack of fuel in the tank was the trouble. Combine this with weak or boiled out batteries and you can see how the Singer Boys Pit Crew was indeed busy.

The Ballams also returned with another entry to the Tailgate Picnic. Their theme this year was a drive in movie where the feature was "Werewolves in London" Their 4AD was dressed out with various drive-in paraphernalia and drive-in ware (no pun here) of popcorn and take-out chinese food. Ed, Anne and Jonathan were also suitably dressed as Were-people who were out on a family night out that went... well hairy! thge judges could not pass this one by and they were awarded with the "Most Outrageous" picnic.

Our club display (1930's Brooklands Pit) certainly grabbed much attention from those attending the show as well as the British Invasion organizers who awarded us with this year's Club Participation Award! We were even approached by a video crew, as well as reporters from Practical Classics and Hemmings! the Boys in White were more than willing to pose and provide commentary. The Mini group at the show also set up a club display on the Friday. A "Merry-go-Round" theme with cars arranged around a music and light system. Very clever! Unfortunately they did or could not display their works on the Saturday or Sunday. Next year's display is already in the planning stages: A Singer Dealership! Everyone can be involved in this one since along with the "new" models, the dealership can feature "used" cars as well (you know, trade-ins and alike). All are welcome to participate and if Stowe is in your plans, please let us know so that we can draw up a plan for the display and get the cooperation of the British Invasion organizers. They have been very receptive to us and we are sure that they will cooperate.

So thank you to all who attended and made this a memorable event... in more ways than one. Thank you too to all who took the time to help with the set-up and take-down of the display.

What is wrong with posting the Stowe info here ? I even removed the file upload quota, but nope...

I am just wondering why I waste my time building a website ?
why I waste my money on keeping the website up ?

just wondering...

Just like some officers never come to this forum any more, I don't go to external links advertised here for nefarious reasons.

Mike,

If you read the passage above you will find the story. I tried to add the photos to this site first but the problem that I encountered the other day reappeared. In an effort to try and help you with a solution to this I e-mailed earlier today with a screen shot of the message that I get when trying to upload photos.

I have just tried to attach a photo to this message and again I receive the following message at the top of my screen:

"Sorry, you have reached your maximum Upload Quota Limit of 2 MB"

The file in question is not large (194 Kb). I also tried to see if this message appears with other threads (I used the TEST forum) and the same message does still appear. I do not doubt that you have made the required modifications to the program, I am letting you know that the problem still exists. That is why I used the blog, and that is why I sent you the e-mail.

I am not trying to waste yours or anyone else's time. I wanted to get the information out there and I did try here first.

As to why anyone chooses come to any site or not, well I can not answer that one. I am here. I post on the site, I reply to posts on the site and I have, at this time, the 3rd highest number of posts on this site. Yes I use blogs, as do some of the officers.

As to not going to external links, that too is a choice. The blog is there if people choose to go to it. They are tied to this site since those pertaining to club events and alike, I do post the links here. I think that the two complement each other so I use both. If nefarious links are your concern, you could type in the address manually or go to the Blogger website and do a search on me or Singers at Stowe and that should get you there also.

So I invite you, and others, to read the post on this thread about Stowe. For me, facing the inevitable onslaught of fall and winter, it was a great way to end the Singer Show season. 2007 was a banner year for our Marque and I enjoyed participating and contributing to it. The opportunity to go to Mad Dogs (and have the opportunity to say that I had been to Kalamzoo) allowed me to see cars and members that I had not before. Kudos to all who made the effort. Stowe is a favorite of mine, being the first real show that I attended - even without my Roadster!

This has truly been a banner Singer year for me: British on the Green on the shores of the Potomac river, Beaconsfield's Picnic in the Park, the local car club's Gymkana, Kingston, Ottawa and now Stowe. Top those off with visits to Gene Abbondelo in Maryland, Bil Haley in Virginia, Larry Doyon in Trois-Rivieres, Robert Moreau in Terrebonne and Dave Norton in Michigan. It was a treat to see everyone and share in the fun and pass on the Singer Spirit, because like I said to a fellow member and friend at Stowe, I come to shows to meet people because they are what makes the club what it is.
