George Turner Models - Singer TT

Post by Peter McKercher »

Coincident with the construction of the new digs for my Singers, I resuscitated a long standing interest in pre war slot cars to complement the decor. It started in '62 when my Dad bought me a pair of 1929 scalextric Blower Bentleys and and a figure 8 track set up. I''ve now put in a 3' X 16' layout for fellow vintage car enthusiasts to play with while talking Singers in general. Thanks to Ebay, I've been able to pick up some new (old) Bentleys, Alfas and a few other obscure pre war slot kits to round out the collection. Below are a couple of the more obscure examples from my collection.

I am now informed that George Turner is considering production of a Singer TT slot car (the 4 raced at the Ards Tourist Trophy). George is a former Lesneys (Matchbox) model maker and designer working mainly on Yesteryear, Kingsize and Matchbox 1.75 ranges. In 1980 large parts of Lesneys were closed, so George went freelance and quickly built up a strong reputation as a highly skilled prototype model maker and designer. He worked in the 80's for many toy firms including Merit where he designed and produced many prototype pre-school toys - Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat being two. Matchbox also continued to use his talents up until the Mattel buy-out and eventual move of Matchbox to the USA in the late '90's.

Below is a sample of George's work. It is a K3 MG Magnette (built by Peter Seager-Thomas). I am in the process of building one myself. Complementing George's excellent body kit is a set of Peter Seager-Thomas' excellent scale rudge wheels. I will be adding a couple of George's Singer TT's to my collection, should he decide to proceed with the project.
