Announcing a NEW bulletin board for Singercars

Post by mikeyr »

Welcome to this new board.

I have wanted to change to this style of board for years now but members I spoke to seemed to prefer the old style. A issue has come up that I believe this board will help the club officers resolve so I installed this for use by the club officers (there is a secret group for the officers). But I believe many users will prefer this style so I am putting up for a vote.

This type of board has many benefits over the old style and some disadvantages as well. On the plus side, there is a search engine so you will be able to search past messages for help. It can accept pictures if you are telling us how you fixed something, now you upload a picture to show us. You have many options, one of which is to be notified via e-mail when a subject you are watching is replied to, in the past that only went to a few people, now you can choose. It has PM (Private Messaging), the advantages are many.

The disadvantage is that this type of board or forum is on the radar screen of spammers and robots, etc. So unlike the old board where anyone and everyone could enter messages, on this board you must first register. The reason for that is that this board will show up to spammers very quickly and if it was a open board, they would all tell us how to get rich, see their girlfriend, etc. and I don't want that, so the board is closed and you have to register. The old board looked like a simple HTML page to spammers and robots, so they did not catch it as a bulletin board.

On the plus side of registration, you do not need to worrry about your e-mail address getting out or being scanned off the website, it is stored in a database that I and only I have the password to. I will NOT ever release your e-mail without your prior permission and I see no reason to ever disclose it since members can send you e-mail from this board without knowing your actual address.

In the future if we keep this board, we can have a NASOC Members only section or any one of many features I have not yet mentioned.

Mike

Great to see the board back up.

And remember, Paul and I are happy to make an Avitar for anyone who wants one for their Singer. We'll either create it from our database of photos, or, if we don't have it, just e-mail us a side view or 3/4 front view photo.

Happy Cyber-motoring!
