Fire and stuff

Post by mikeyr »

Just a FYI, Santa Barbara has had a fire burning in the hills for over a month now, it is in its 5th week, 70,000acres so far. It is still 15-20 miles away so no danger, no worries.

However, it is now less than 2 miles from a major power line that feeds Santa Barbara, its not the only power line of course but it is the major one. We have been warned that if the fire gets to the power lines there will be interruptions in service and most likely also interruptions on net connections.

Just a FYI for the regulars who might notice the site down and wonder why.

Peter, you are a smart-derrière :)

We just got this e-mail from the UCSB Chancellor's office (where I work):

"The University has been advised by Southern California Edison that the Zaca Fire has gotten closer to a major high-voltage transmission line corridor that contributes to much of the Santa Barbara area's power supply. Should flames reach the lines, some power outages may occur in Santa Barbara and adjacent communities.

As a precaution, please turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive electronic equipment, before leaving work this evening."

So all you regulars, I hope you are reading this today because if you are not the website may be down and you will not know why. I "may" even keep it down for a day or so IF I can't guarantee good clean power free of surges, spikes, brownouts.

Mike,

Should the site go down the hope is that you and your family are safe. When everything is back up and running, do put up a message to let us know that all is OK.

Thank You Paul, we should be perfectly safe, the fire is still near 20 miles away and one mountain range away, ok we call them mountains some people call them hills. We are safe, its just the power lines that are the issue.

This afternoon the fire got within one mile from the power lines and then the wind shifted away from the power lines. It has taken 5 weeks to travel 40 or more miles so at that speed it would take another 2 weeks to reach us but it is now getting into areas where there are roads for the firefighters to get in and fight the fire, it won't make it here (I don't think (I sure hope) ).

A good map is at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/about ... 07/map.pdf and it shows the size of this thing, I am guessing based on that legend on the map that the fire has travelled 40-50 miles to the South since it was started by a farmer grinding on a metal pipe prior to welding. http://www.sbcfire.com has details of the fire itself. On that map, Goleta/Santa Barbara is right at the bottom of the map with our backs to the ocean and the fire in front. The map makes it look scary when you see how much it has traveled and how close we are but in reality its a long ways and with good roads for fire equipment.

Long story, short...thanks Paul but I think we will be fine, its just the power that we are worried about.
