4AD tool roll and its contents

Post by kabu »

Hi All,

My 4AD restoration project is finally nearing completion and one of the finalizing touches is of course the tool kit. I have already earlier acquired and restored all the correct tools that are attached to the firewall. However the contents and construction of the original tool roll supplied also with the cars still needs some work.

There has been an article on the roadster tools by Bill Haverly in the MASCOT magazine in 1989 and that lists the contents of the 4AD tool roll are as follows:
- 4" screwdriver
- adjustable spanner (medium)
- distributor spanner
- set of 3 box spanners and tommy bar
- tyre valve remover
- tappet spanner
- 5/16" x 3/8" open ended spanner
- tyre levers
- oiling funnel

Here is a picture of some tools that I currently have and believe that may be from the original tool roll.

Can someone verify if any of these tools look correct? The bent round bar in the middle is apparently the tommy bar for the box (tube) spanner beside it, and should be straight. The flattened cone on the right is maybe the oiling funnel.

Also, a picture from an originals tools and a tool roll, even withut all the correct contents, would be really helpful so that I know what kind of tools to search for and could fabricate a tool roll that would look like the original.

Best Regards,
Pekka

I found a vintage medium sized adjustable spanner that might be suitable for the tool roll. It did not come with the car but it is old British "King Dick" brand but could be even too old (pre-war) type. Does that spanner below look familiar to anyone?

In the 1989 article (http://www.singster.co.uk/mascot%20august%201989.html) Bill Haverly mentions that the budget lock key (for engine compartment and trunk/boot) for Roadster from 4A forward was "L" shaped. The tool on the right came with my car and can be used to open the budget locks, it is not exactly "L"-shaped but does look professionally made. Does anyone else have similar budget lock key on their Roadster?

Pekka

I use a late '50s/early '60s Volkswagen Transporter gas door loop key for the bonnet and boot locks on my 4AD. A reproduction, it fits perfectly and comes with a mounting holster.

Here's one without a holster for $10 US:

Hi Kabu .. I am not sure if these images will turn out, as I have no idea how to upload onto the forum .. but this is an original key from a 1950's 4AD Singer Roadster, which the owner has had all his life.
The original owner bought the Singer brand new, and shortly after lost the key and had a new one made up,.. after he sold the car, and 20 years or so later he found the original key, and gave it to me for my Singer.
It is in a "t" shape, made of bronze or brass and the handle end is rounded ..
Hope this helps ..
Stephen
