1952 4AD Roadster rear axle wanted

Post by Stephen »

Hi Everyone .. pulled the rear axles out to replace the wheel studs as I had a few missing and found out one of the rear axles has had a repair.. The axle had a piece of tube cut welded over the break,. it possibly may be OK but I would rather one that did not have a repair .. if anyone can help with a rear axle to suit a 1952 4AD Roadster it would be appreciated.. or do any other make, car rear axles fit the Singer ? Regards Stephen ( Down Under Australia)

Stephen,
Sorry to hear about your axle problem. I recommend you replace the axles with alloy axles, especially if you have a twin carburetor 4AD. I sheared an axle on my single carburetor 4AD back in 2005. I've driven 10,000 miles without any more problems. Dutchman Motorsports did mine for a little less than $500 each. Do a search on this forum for rear axles. If you want an original axle in good condition, I have one I'll sell for $200 US.

I second that. Get some made from modern metal and never even think about the axles again. I did that to my 4AD back in the late 1970's and its still going strong.

Hi Mark and Mike, .. Thanks for the advice, too bad I only just decided to do the wheel studs, if I had decided to do them last year I could have picked up the axle, as we were in Nashville, and some friends of ours just visited Nashville and Memphis this week, and are now onto Route 66 ?? .. Thank you for the offer Mark, and I may have to take you up on it, ..I never thought I could get them made, so I will try to see if anyone in Australia will make a couple first , if I cannot find anyone to make a couple up I will let you know and make arrangements to get yours shipped out ..
Has anyone found any other car's that the axles interchange, maybe early Austin, Morris, etc

Regards Stephen

It's highly unlikely. The axles were notoriously bad when new. Singer Motors couldn't keep up with the demand for replacements in the U.S. so Vaughan Singer Motors in California took the route of making their own.

Thanks for the info Peter, still trying to find a local manufacturer who will make some, there are a couple of Hot Rod suppliers that may be able to help, if they can help I will post the results .. Regards Stephen
