Gearbox oil

Post by kabu »

The owner's manual of a 4 AD instructs to use 40 SAE single grade oil in the gearbow. This oil type (40 SAE single grade) seems difficult to get nowadays, at least here in Finland. 30 SAE and 50 SAE is available.

What oil have you used on your 4AD gearboxes?

I used whatever I put in the motor, Castrol 20-50 and it worked for 20 years with no issues. I did try 40wt. when I could get it but found no real difference in shifting with 20-50. Its what the SOC recommended back in the 70's.

Thanks Mikey. I filled the gearbox today with 20W-50 oil. Next step in the restoration will be making the carpets, I just received the material from the UK this week.
