54 roadster rear axle oil seals

Post by tomr »

I need to repair the seals on one side of the axle, but probably should do both sides at the same time. Part numbers or a source of supply would be appreciated. Also what gear oil should I use to replace existing.TomR

Dave Green should have them, they are a odd size that we had to have made at one time but other more active clubs have picked up the slack and made them I believe.

We NASOC are currently out of stock on these seals. Try Bill Haverly in England

90 weight gear oil is recommended.

Is it safe to assume that there is no specific brand or type of gear oil recommended for the 4AD? I keep getting generic recommendations that synthetic is the way to go, but question if the seals are compatible :?:

I would be afraid of going synthetic in the 4AD, I assume the seals can handle the synthetic since they are new seals but the sealing surfaces just are not made to todays specifications and certainly not synthetic.

I always put Castrol 90 in mine.

I agree with Mike. The seal quality and surfaces on a 60 year old parts are suspect. Go with what worked back in the day on these old british vehicles. My 2cents worth. :P

Thanks guys, I figured it to be a chance to go synthetic. I'll go with the Castrol AP 80W-90 gear lube.
Thanks for all the help!!!!! :P
