gas tank sending unit assistance

Post by StLouisSinger »

Hello all!
Can anyone tell me if this sending unit (#11 on the schematic) is the same as found on my 52 Singer 4AD?

I'm just guessing it may be based on the appearance and some inconclusive web searching.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Let me start with the fact that I have not removed the working sender in the fuel tank of my 1953 4AD. That said, I've had good luck repairing sending un its in both air- and water-cooled Volkswagen applications, by replacing the float media.

In a gasoline powered Dasher wagon, I pulled the sending unit and replaced the float with a piece of orange-glazed foam, that was actually part of a "floater" keychain for boat keys. I trimmed the piece to fit, and it worked as well as the "ping-pong" ball style float it replaced. One year later, I pulled the sending unit to check for deterioration of the orange foam float.

There was none.

It might work.

That unit should work in the 4AD. You might want to contact Moss and confirm that it contains a rheostat and not just a switch, like the MG T series cars use. You also may have to bend the float arm to get the proper range on your gauge.

Good Luck!

As I recall, the Singer sending unit is set at 90 ohms resistance to match the gauge readout.

Might be different for the Singer vs Spriget.

Pre-War Singer units had a 5 bolt flange vs 6 post-war, but the design is very similar. The early units also used a cork float vs the tinned steel 'can' used post-war, which rusts out. I've adapted plastic floats from other units in the past, as well as old Weber carb floats!

Good luck and let us know what you learn about the MOSS unit!

Cheers,
Phillip
