I think its time for some pictures, the gabriel should fit and not be 2.5" too big, so something is wrong, could be wrong part or could be a modified 4AD by a previous owner.

The original top bracket is a flat steel bar that is bent upwards, like a sharp cornered U upside down. That upwards dimension could be about 2.5". If your car has been fitted with shorter shocks at some point and the top bracket has been replaced with a straight flat bar that could explain the difference.

I want to thank all of you Singer owners for helping me get this shock situation resolved. I discovered that I was not compressing the new Gabriel 63902 shocks enough for the fit. I have been running the 4ADT for years with previously recommended new 1970 model Barracuda shocks. John Slusars' admonishment to cease using them was absolutely correct. The car drives significantly better now. I no longer had the originals so had no way of comparing sizes to any new replacement models. So, again I appreciate your insistence that the Gabriels were correct. Now on to the next problem to resolve.

Quick question. The interchange list says the Monroe 37034ST shock is the replacement for my 52 4AD. Is it correct to assume that this is the better choice over the Gabriel 63902? The Gabriel is harder to find and it does not come with the dust cover.

Thanks for the help,
Fred

While I can't answer your question directly, I can tell you what I fit to my 4AD last year. They were shocks for a Chevy Luv pickup, and they fit well with very similar extended and collapsed length compared to the originals. The NAPA p/n is RR 94037.

Changes have been made to the interchange list. Are there any modifications like grinding to fit lower pin?
FYI These shocks are listed for Chevy Luv and Nissan pick up front shocks 1969-72. So other manufacturers listings will work.

Thanks guys, that helps! :P When I first joined the club, I received a copy of the interchange list. I was wondering if a current list is available via the club web site, or is it something that must be emailed?
Thanks again!

While I have not sent it out via club's magazine. I can send it out via e-mail to members or non-members that want a copy.
I also welcome input on things that will work as interchanges or close enough with slight modifications.
I do have some more input that I need to add to it though.

Is this "interchange list" for the Singer 4AD posted on the forum somewhere ?
I have a 52 4AD and something like a part reference interchange list would be great.
I took note of the Front Shock part numbers the members talked about in this thread, but now need to double check on brake parts.
Master Cylinder, Wheel Cylinders and Brake hoses. Thanks, Bill

Dave has the interchange list.

If I had it, it would already be on the website

Front brakes are Austin Healy 100

Thanks for replying, made note of that wheel cylinder info. Also trying to figure out info on the Master cylinder as well, would it be that same Austin Healy also ?
Maybe a rebuild kit, or are they so simple just a good cleaning will do the trick.

No the master is different. Just the wheel cylinders

The master is weird it’s off a Austin A30 or A40 even harder to find parts for. There is a Morris that had a master that looks the same and bolts in but different internal piston diameter so it can’t be used.

Rebuild kits used to be available I have not look for well over a decade though
