Fender Beading

Post by 2001f4s »

Looking for replacement fender beading. This went between the fenders and the body and also there was a strip between the front/rear fender and the floor board.

Any ideas on sources, material of construction, and dimensions for this beading. Also was it painted or black?

Thank you
Scott

It's also referred to as welting. You may find better options if you use that term and should be to source the nylon or vinyl version of that just about anywhere in many colours. There was a posting about the colours used for welting a few months ago, as I recall, perhaps in the discussion about upholstery colours and paint schemes. The things between the running boards and the fenders are actually specially moulded rubber gaskets. I think I've seen those regularly on eBay, though they were pricey, like many of the other reproduced rubber gaskets for the roadsters. In a pinch, you could make something reasonably passable for those out of inner tube rubber wrapped around cord or tubing to form the bead, I think.

I prefer it black but on all the 4AD's I have seen that were original, it was painted. Any fender welting will do, but the original was quite thick, like a 5/16" rope wrapped in vinyl. The most common is to use VW welting but its pretty thin compared to the original 4AD welting, but easily available. When I did my 4AD, I had my upholstery shop do the interior and fender welting, they did it wrong the first time by using standard welting rope or whatever its called and was too thin.

Moss Motors carries fender "piping" in black, red, green and cream for the MG-Ts. It comes in 9 yard lengths.

Thanks Mark, I will check it out.

I found a source for 5/16 rubber welting, and was thinking that size might be appropriate for the Singer.

In the canvas makers supply is a produce called Kedder. It is available in black or white, and it has a sew through flap on it that can be placed between the fender and body and everywhere else. It runs less than a $1/foot if you find the right source, but it shows up in an internet search as Kedder. It is what I intend to use and its nearly indestructible. Beautiful stuff for this job.

Yes, the Singer 'welting' was thicker than most and used a spiral wound paper core wrapped in a Rexine material - the forerunner to vinyl. The non-leather components of the interior were done in the same material. On Roadsters the welting was painted body colour in most of the cases I have seen, and on all the cars I have owned.

Keder not Kedder. Sorry for any confusion. Sailright has black for $1.45/ft, White for $1.20/ft
