Peking-Paris 2007

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Peking-Paris 2007

Post by pekingparis »

My brother and his friend own a Singer lemans. They bought one in Engeland and made it like new in the Netherlands.
At this moment they are driving the Peking-Paris Challenge 2007 and they are doing very well. Although they lost in a dessert storm yesterday their front splash-boards :? but they hope to put it back on at the restday tomorrow.

I thought maybe you Singer lovers were interrestet in how our dutch boys in their SInger are doing so that's why i posted this.

They have a site...in dutch only :( but with a lot of pictures :D and if you will leave a comment in their guestbook (gastenboek) i surtenly knows that they would appreciate that and gives them the spirit to hold on and get to Paris in one piece.

kind regards,
Helga

ps sorry for my bad english but it's the best i can

ABSOLUTELY we want to hear more about it, the U.S. entry had to back out late last year when some issues were found with the motor but we ABSOLUTELY want to hear and more importantly see all the details of the Singer in the race.

Helga,

I certainly admire the "crew" of number 20. That is a long drive in such a tiny car. Good luck to them on a successful trip!

I made a minor change to the home page, sorry, things went bad at work and I did not have time tonight. No, not bad for me, just short handed with lots to do and I did not get home until past 10 tonight.

Just had a wonderful run along the canal driveway in Ottawa in my Nine Sports. Even with smooth roads, though, every bump seems directly transferred to the kidneys. I can't imagine how our intrepid Dutch team is doing Mongolia in a Le Mans.

They do seem to be doing well, so far placing 43rd out of 76 in their class. So far they have reported losing their mud flaps. That seems to pale in comparison to an Aston bending its axle tube, the front wings falling off a Citroen Roadster and a Ford Pilot V8, having its rear shocks punching large holes up through the floor.

Well done gentlemen. You're doing Singer proud. Three cheers from Canada

Just reviewed the official stats. In fact the Singer team is running 43 overall out of 134 entrants, 24 in its class out of 76 and qualifying for Gold medal status- remarkable.

Unfortnately i didn't hear from them today....in the dessert the connection isn't as good as here
They left at 7 a.m. and get a speech from the major in Ulan Bataar.
When they left the Gobi-dessert they even got more troubel of the dessertstorms.
I also saw and read on a dutch review that they did it today very well and moved on up the resultlist.
Tonight they are sleepin in a "Yurt" (tent) while the nights are very very cold, near freezing-point.

And move up they did. The Le Mans has moved up to 20th overall and 14th in class. Very impressive!

And more good news today!

They already reached the campsite, first as pre-war car and 5th overall!
With the time-trials they are very fast because they are very light. The organisation is very impressed by this little car and never expected that they would do it so good  Offcourse we knew
They had some trouble of a loose gaspeddle(?) but on their way they could fix it.
Although the race is very heavy they feeling after washing of the dirt very pleased!
3 Bentleys broke their chassis en 6 team are out of the race.
They decided to drive further without the front wings.

Sofar the update for today.
We are still waiting for the resultlist later today.

I think I will have to write a sequel to my article on Merlin Minshall (http://www.singercars.com/history/merlin.html) . Team 20 is proving what Merlin proved in the Thirties - that Singer truly is an outstanding car. Not to diminish the intrepid performance of our two Dutch adventurers
