Hi, Has anyone sourced the Lockheed decal for the brake fluid reservoir on a 1934 9hp 4 seater and most other models fitted with Lockheed brakes. There seem to be plenty of Girling ones out there but none for Lockheed that I can find in UK
Any help appreciated
Bill

An old friend did a great deal with decals on a restoration by sourcing the graphics online, downloading them and having a graphics company print the design on vinyl with adhesive backing.

If you can't find the graphics online, which I question, there's probably someone in the club who has one you can photograph for comparison.

I would offer a sample from my Nine, but it's too late for your needs.

Best of luck,

David

Hi David,
I've contacted graphics companies in UK but they all say it's too complicated to be worth the effort for a small run. Thanks for your help though & I'll keep trying!
kind regards
Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for accepting my suggestion as it was intended. Here's the thing: my friend used a nearby national graphics store (Staples, I think) and they were willing to make a one off decal for him. Don't know the specifics of materials used, but it seemed that if my friend brought in a camera-ready sample, the store worked with him to get the right results. Give it a try. If Staples doesn't work, ask your friends at a car corral if someone who's a car guy is also affiliated with a local graphics store. Another possibility it to try the people who make racing numbers for cars. They are likely to have had this kind of inquiry in the past.

Please let us know how your solution takes place, as I'm sure you will have success.

Very Best Luck,

David

Hi David,
Thanks again; a friend in the SOC (uk) has a copy that was made some years ago. He's going to send it to me & hopefully we'll have a result! Many thanks for your time & effort
kind regards
Bill

Hi Bill,

Happy to hear there's a path forward.

Let us know how things work for you. Suspect there could be others who could benefit from your enterprise.

Best Wishes,

David

it would be nice to have a copy of the decal here on the forum for future uses (like by me someday).

Nice looking car Bill. I have a couple of shots of mine looking just like that - same ivory body (red wings).

Hey Bill,

This is actually another project we are working on at the 'Canadian Singer Skunkworks'. We have some artwork done but our last quote for a die-cut 3 colour brake fluid resistant sticker was @$700.00CAD to set up and run. The original would have been a water based transfer no doubt, the same as the 'Singer' logo on the rear wing of many Singer cars.

It amazes me that with so many cars using Lockheed brakes in the UK that at least one or two fluid reservoirs have not survived with the logo on it. It is also surprising that information on the design is not so easy to find. Trevor Cornelius in the SOC did a version some years ago. I have one but I am not sure that it is entirely correct. There are various versions in different handbooks that I have seen. The best Singer reference we have is in the 1935 Sports cars handbook.

There is a chap who has a stall at Beaulieu who sells a version for the MG SA and WA cars. The company is called SVW Spares. I think he charged @25 quid for it. This is the reservoir logo from the MG handbook circa mid-30's:

The business is now under new management evidently. Website is:http://www.svwspares.co.uk

We'll let you know how our foray into the Lockheed logo adventure goes...

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Phillip

It might be worth contacting these people to see if they would take the project on; as you say, there are more than just Singer owners as potential customers:

Hello All,

I believe this doesn't need to become a 'rocket science' project.

A Sunbeam acquaintance in Kentucky had an excellent decal made by the local graphics company's (Staples, I think) xerox techs. The decal was a Cavallino Rampante on a shield, the standard Ferrari emblem used in the early 1960s. It was printed on adhesive-backed vinyl and applied to the outer bodywork, holding up well over several years. To be fair, the car was always garaged, so fading was not a concern.

Perhaps a trial run could be made on vinyl, to test for design, color correctness and suitability of texture and adhesion in a finished prototype.

I don't think this has to be either costly or difficult. My two cents. BTW you can't type two cents with the number 2 and the cent mark. It's no longer part of the keyboard in our culture.

Very Best

Hey David,

It isn't rocket science you're right, but takes research and time to get the design and materials correct. We sourced a supplier who could do the correct die-cut round edges and oil/brake fluid resistant inks, but that comes at a price! I've checked out the 'I say, ding dong' website and they seem to have a very comprehensive line of products and might be able to do the same job..albeit again..at a price. I'm all for researching any avenue and testing out options.

Here's the prototype on a new/old stock reservoir:

Colour may still need to be tweaked and this design is not quite the same as the one shown in the 1935 handbook, but we know it dates from @that time.

Hey, Phillip,

This label prototype looks great! Look forward to seeing it in person.

Hello, I got a email from Bill and this is his words. When I posted it, the picture order got reversed, so first one is the new one, second is his original.
Hi folks; here's the latest on the Lockheed decal. I have sourced a similar one by following up the MG SVWspares lead and have decided to go with this. Unfortunately I had the last one in his stock but second attachment shows what it's like. First attachment shows what the original was probably like but from the remains of transfers on original tanks the yellow/orange is far too dark. I didn't succeed in finding any manufacturer willing to take on production ...maybe someone else will have more luck!
Thanks for all your help, advice and encouragement. Good Singering to one and all
Bill
