Rebirthing one '34 from a '33 & a '34

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

Darcy

Ian Blackburn had recommended the front portion of an MGB muffler, which I believe is actually a resonator and failing that, recommended any straight through pipe. I have been looking for a suitable silencer as well and all that seems to suit is a resonator. These alter the note of the exhaust to reduce some of the harshness, but are certainly louder than what you would get with a proper silencer. Actually, this is what I have been using on my Nine Sports for 15 years and it gives a throaty sound that belies its diminutive size. Another option, which Bob Tayler used on his Le Mans was a TR-2 exhaust, although he said it required some modification. It's also quite pricey now. Let me know if you find anything different.

The Walker muffler is a perfect match for the Singer 4AD.

Do you mean their resonator or is it a muffler. If so, do you know what size it is. My down pipe is 2" OD, so the Inlet on the walker has to fit over it (2 1/4?). Preferably the outlet is less than 2".

I don't know the size of the pipe, its a muffler from a Ferguson tractor that is a perfect match to the 4AD muffler.

might fit a LM also don't know.

I have two grey Fergies. I can measure the OD of the exhaust pipe and silencer if that is helpful?

Thanks Colin. Our local exhaust expert is away until 18th so matter is on hold for a moment. I understand those tractor mufflers are still sold here but not certain on size. On my previous 4 A I used an early Cooper S muffler, sound great.

I am currently putting my Tailshaft back together with a solution from a .local car club member. From the outside it retains all original fittings. I will post details after final fit to the car.

I have a Walker #21035 muffler that I purchased for my 1953 4ADT. I purchased it from Tractor Supply Corporation and yes, it is for a Massey-Ferguson tractor. The inlet measures 1 5/8 inch OD and is slotted (not flared). The outlet is 1 5/8 inch OD and is flared. I believe a 1 1/2" OD pipe will fit inside. I hope this helps.

Door template out of ply and old plastic show boxes, transposed to plastic sheet, and then cut timbers to match the template for one door. The template fits both doors, not bad considering the body woodwork build from scratch. Now to join together using my Festool Domino tenon tool. Not quiet the original way but should be just as strong, if not more so as there will be multiple tendons all glued in place.

Final step will be to fine sand each door for a good fit, as door is made slightly oversize. Hinges have been rebored and are being chromed, should be back next week.

I am leaving the fitting of the bottom timbers until the doors are in place and then they will mate to the door openings.

Slow progress, rebuilt oil guage, acquired original speedo and tacho, they are on their way back to UK for rebuild, cotton wire loom laid and sent off for a new harness, initially unbraided until final fit?

Hinges that came with one of my two donor cars, the other didn't have doors, I decided were not appropriate nor original, new hinges now in hand, so work on doors resumes soon.

Slow but steady progress. Oil guage still to have painted indicator fitted.

They just arrived and i am thrilled, they look great, even if the don't work, when the car is still, they will still look great. The clock doesn't work, but i knew that, i have the hands to add on or wait for a working clock???

Beautiful Darcy. Nothing like a new set of gauges to animate your car.

I am ashamed at my progress relative to others, but that is the best inspiration. I am currently building my wire loom, fitted radiator only to discover i need to adjust the length of my new cross member for light stands, scuttle ready for primer etc, guards getting closer. Original 30s wiper motor found in my parts and working. I wll get there, soon....
