1934, 9, removing clutch pedal swing shaft

For now, I lumped all the pre-war cars together, I would LOVE for there to be enough demand to split it into groups (hint...hint, post here about your pre-war Singer)

1934, 9, removing clutch pedal swing shaft

Post by DarcyG »

Has anyone had to remove the clutch pedal axel shaft from the side of the gear box? Mine is very badly worn and either needs replacing or sleeved. It is held in place by a tapered pin. That came out easily, but the shaft remains stubbenly fixed.

I thought of heat but I am little concerned about damaging the casting. I tried a small panel slide hammer, but no movement.

Any other ideas out there?

I will poke around tonight, yes I have removed the one on my gearbox but it was many years ago and don't remember any issues doing it. Let me try and re-assemble it tonight and see if I can figure out where the issue might be.

It was easy after some thought. Here is what we did:
1. Drilled and taped the shaft
2. Inserted six inch length of rod
3. Slipped over some spaces, washer and nut and drew the bar out, It leaves a hole that goes through to the inner gear box.
4. Placed shaft in lath, turned down plus made matching bronze sleeve ( from old king pin sleeve)
5. Place shaft in freezer for two hours to shrink and then tap in being very careful to align pin holes

Job done.

you make it sound easy but it does not sound really easy.

Getting it out was much easier than expected, putting back with correct alignment with the tapered pin was a little more challenging.
